Toronto Blue Jays 1 — New York Yankees 2

Ichiro Suzuki returned to star-caliber play in tonight’s 2-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

David Phelps started the second game of today’s doubleheader. The precise control that Phelps had been praised for escaped him in the 2nd inning as he would walk 2 consecutive batters. Rookie shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria makes Phelps pay for the walks with a run scoring single but Phelps would settle down. Phelps would not face a predicament until the 7th inning, his final inning of work. An error on Derek Jeter, a base hit, and a walk put Phelps pitch count at 110, a career-high, and would spell the end for the rookie pitcher. Phelps would go 6.2 innings while allowing just the 1 run while allowing 3 hits and 3 walks but tallying 6 strikeouts. But he did hand a bases-loaded situation to Boone Logan who would put out the rally and get 2 more batters out in a solid relief appearance. Cody Eppley would strike out the only batter he faces in the 8th inning and Rafael Soriano would make his second appearance of the day and close out his 2nd save of the day, making it 42 on the season.

Ichiro Suzuki got 3 hits in the first game of today and got the start for tonight’s game too, with outstanding results. The veteran Japanese outfielder was robbed of a run on an outstanding throw by outfielder Colby Rasmus to get Jayson Nix at home. But Chris Stewart followed Suzuki with a ground-rule double to bring in the 1st run for the Yankees. Ichiro Suzuki’s 2nd hit would be a double in the 4th inning but he would be stranded yet again. Ichiro would get his 3rd hit when he singled to right field and stole 2nd and 3rd base but would again be stranded on the bases. In the 8th inning,  Curtis Granderson would get to 3rd base following a walk, sacrifice bunt, and a stolen base. Ichiro Suzuki completed an outstanding day with his 4th hit of tonight’s game, bringing in the go-ahead run. Derek Jeter’s hit to leadoff the game was his 200th of the season, making it his 8th 200-hit season of his career, tying him with Lou Gehrig. But today was Ichiro’s day as he went 7 for 8 in 2 games, including going 4 for 4 in the 2nd game and had 4 stolen bases.

Win – Cody Eppley (1-2)

Loss – Steve Delabar (4-3)

Save – Rafael Soriano (42)
