(Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images) Kansas City Royals 1 — New York Yankees 8   Yankees break three-game loss and one run ceiling in tonight’s 8-1 win over the Kansas City Royals. Building on a complete game win, Ivan Nova was dealing. After striking out the first two batters, he gave up a pair of singles but would go 12 consecutive batters before the next baserunner in the fifth inning. Escaping a fifth inning bases-loaded jam, Nova would string together nine consecutive batters out before he would lose his shutout in the eighth inning. A walk would be followed with a double by Eric Hosmer to bring home the Royals first run of the game. But it made little difference. Like many other games, the Yankees came out with a fire. In the first inning, Brett Gardner walked and Ichiro Suzuki followed with a single. Robinson Cano grounded out with the runners in motion, putting runners in scoring position. Then with Travis Hafner batting, Royals’ starting pitcher Wade Davis uncorked a wild pitch that barely got away from catcher George Kottaras. Lead runner Brett Gardner made a break for home plate and would score on a bit of an errant throw by Kottaras. The throw would be fielded by first baseman Eric Hosmer and he would get the trailing runner, Ichiro Suzuki, trying to score on the wild pitch. The adventure at home plate produced the lone run of the inning. One run was the theme of the three-game losing streak, but the streak ends here. In the third inning, Luis Cruz started the inning with a single and Brett Gardner would be hit by a pitch. With two outs and two on, Robinson Cano let it rip on a 1-1 curveball and went deep for a three-run home run. His 21st home run of the season gave the Yankees a four-run lead. The sixth inning started out in a great way when Robinson Cano led off with a single. Pinch-hitting for Travis Hafner, Vernon Wells got a single to add to the cause. Zoilo Almonte would follow with a walk and the bases were loaded for Lyle Overbay. On an at-bat with a 3-2 count and four foul balls, Overbay went the opposite way bringing home all the runs with his 11th home run of the season. His grand slam put the Yankees ahead by eight and Nova had an easy win. Ivan Nova got his second win in as many starts with eight innings of one-run baseball. He gave up five hits while walking two and striking out six. He has given up three runs over 17 innings in his last two starts. In injury news, Vernon Wells got two hits after replacing Travis Hafner in the sixth inning after a left foot contusion he suffered during the game. Brett Gardner exited the game in the seventh inning after being hit in the right foot, his second time being hit in the game. He was diagnosed with a right foot contusion. Both batters are listed as day-to-day.   Win – Ivan Nova (4-2) Loss – Wade Davis (4-8)   Notables Royals *Eric Hosmer – 2 for 4, 2B, RBI (40) *George Kottaras – 1 for 3 Yankees *Robinson Cano – 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, 3-Run Home Run (21) in the 3rd, 3 RBI (62) *Lyle Overbay – 1 for 4, R, Grand Slam (11) in the 6th, 4 RBI (40)   Current Yankees Record: 49-42   Get your Yankees Tickets from our friends at TiqIQ.
