PLAYERS: Derek Jeter
TEAMS: New York Yankees

New York Yankees' shortstop Derek Jeter increased baseball activity on Monday by taking ground balls and swinging the bat.  Jeter resumed playing catch during the Yankees last home stand, which was the first time since the new fracture was discovered in April. As reported by Bryan Hoch at MLB.com, "While Monday's progress is a good sign for Jeter, he has not yet been cleared to run, and manager Joe Girardi said during the club's series in Seattle that rehabbing infielder Alex Rodriguez is ahead of Jeter in terms of moving closer to a projected return date." "Jeter said last week that he did not believe swinging a bat would be a problem, and he is hopeful this week's visit to Dr. Anderson will permit him to begin running, as well as continuing to ramp up his workouts." Jeter turns 39 years old next month and the projected time table has him returning to the Yankees sometime after the All-Star break. Jeter, who has played his entire career with the Yankees, has 3,304 hits, 255 home runs, 1,254 runs batted in, 354 stolen bases, and a .313 career batting average.

Derek Jeter was scheduled to meet with his surgeon this week in Charlotte, NC as part of a follow up examination on his injured ankle. He apparently had that meeting over the weekend, and received some good news. Jeter took 25 dry-swings and fielded grounders right at him on Monday in Tampa, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York. This represents a step in the right direction...

Yankees Lose But, Before The Game, Cano Wins

With CC Sabathia once again pitching poorly in Oakland and the Athletics continuing their hot streak at home, last night's Yankee loss was as predictable as it was painful.  Something that was not predictable was the announcement before the game that Robinson Cano had been named AL captain of this year's Home Run Derby.I would have thought that last year's horrible experience...

Yankees: Are Pigs going to start flying in the Bronx

The New York Yankees batting stats over the last seven days are undeniably startling. Before you look below, please realize that the Yankees have won six of their last seven games, which is just remarkable. Yankees Player of the Week: June 3-June 9

Brett Gardner had his best week of the season by hitting .520, with 1 HR, and 6 RBI’s. In a week that saw the Yankees sweep the Cleveland Indians, and take 3 out of 4 from the Seattle Mariners, the New York Yankees player of the week is Brett Gardner. Gardy has been flying under the radar for most of the season while putting together a career season. Over the last 7 days, Gardner...

Yankees on the rise: Is it juju, Tex or tomato cans?

We are 6-1 - (an .857, winning pct., baby!) - since last week's International Juju Intervention, in which millions of fans - (maybe billions; we're beasts in China) - charged their TVs, bombarding the team with subatomic Rizzutonic particles, the Higgs bosons of baseball. But rather than taking credit, let's consider other possible reasons behind the Yankee resurgence...

Can We Be Honest?

This will be the easiest and most accurate prediction I have made in the last 20 years:The Yankees recent draft will not yield a single player of value for the Yankees.Read all the scouting reports you want;  listen to the radio waves; follow them on the minor league sites;  do whatever investigative work baseball fans do.The Yankees recent draft will not yield a single player...

Yankees: Oakland A’s are not easy to beat

After winning three of four games vs. the Mariners in Seattle over the weekend, the New York Yankees get a well deserved day off before starting a three game set down in Oakland against the Athletics. Oakland Athletics (Photo credit: Keith Allison) The A’s are in a Moneyball year, meaning that it is a season when this team is good. Actually, the A’s were good last year too...

Pedroia or Cano?

In Major League Baseball there have always been great debates about star players from different teams.  Some that immediately come to mind from the past are Joe DiMaggio or Ted Williams? Carlton Fisk or Thurman Munson? Hank Aaron or Willie Mays? Randy Johnson or Roger Clemens? In this modern era we are in the players are bigger and stronger.  There’s better nutrition, year...
