I really hope the Yankees win the ALDS this week, not just because I want to see them win the World Series, but because I'd also like to see them avenge what went down in the 2006 ALDS against th TIgers. There's some real unfinished business there, with the cruelest cuts self-inflicted. I rank it second to the 2004 ALCS as the playoff series in this era that angered me the most. Here's why.Squawker Jon and I starting writing Subway Squawker in March 2006, with the idea of capturing the Yanks and the Mets when both of them were expected to make a run for it in the playoffs. Imagine my chagrin when the Mets actually made it to within a Yadier Molina home run of the World Series (more on that in a sec!), surpassing the Yankees in the postseason.Arguably the biggest issue for the Yanks that year was that A-Rod, coming off an MVP season, was 1) having an "off year" for him: .290, 35 homers, 121 RBI and a .914 OPS, 2) getting thrown under the bus again and again by h...

Weather Forces New York Yankees to Shuffle Rotation
I can’t articulate how frustrating this is. Here we are on the opening night of the MLB Postseason, the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers tied at one, CC Sabathia is starting to fire on all cylinders, Justin Verlander is looking like Justin Verlander and then it starts raining. Hard. There’s nobody that we can even place the blame on, no target to aim our venom...

Ump takes ball to the face
This one’s going to leave a mark. Home plate umpire Tony Randazzo took a pitch from Ivan Nova right in the kisser during tonights game one between the Yankees and Tigers. Fist bump to bubbaprog for the GIF
Ivan Nova Handles the Big Stage Like an Old Pro
Ivan Nova will have to wait a bit longer for his first playoff start, but he has his first playoff gem under his belt.
Thanks to the suspension of Friday night's game because of rain, Nova was a reliever when he made his first ever postseason pitch on Saturday night. You'd be hard pressed to find a better relief outing, even if you included Mariano Rivera.
Nova held the Tigers...
A day later, Cano and Nova lead Yanks past Tigers
One rainy day after Game 1 started, Robinson Cano and the New York Yankees slammed their way to a blowout.
Nova nails it in his playoff debut
There was some uncertainty surrounding Ivan Nova last night. He had never pitched in a postseason game before, so how he would fare was, for many, an unknown. But not for his teammates.
“I know it’s the playoffs, but baseball’s baseball,” Derek Jeter said. “We played 162 games...

NEW YORK (AP) — No national anthem, all Yankees.

FREDDY GETS WELL-EARNED ALDS START
When the Yankees signed Freddy Garcia, it was no sure thing he would start the third game of a series against the Royals in June, let alone the third game of the playoffs.
But here he is, lined up to get the ball in Game 3 of the ALDS, when he'll face the Tigers in Detroit after getting the nod over A.J. Burnett, Bartolo Colon and Phil Hughes.
"He's kind of earned...
End Zone: Go inside the three-for-all trade
Josh Byrnes and Yankee GM Brian Cashman have known each other since they were both prep school ballplayers in the same competitive high school conference in the Washington, D.C. area. Both can still recite details from the Interstate Athletic Conference final back when Byrnes, the former Arizona GM, was a freshman and Cashman was a speedy senior infielder.
Yankees beat Tigers in Game 1 (finally), 9-2
Ivan Nova may have been tabbed as the No. 2 man in the Yankees' rotation before the playoffs began, but the rookie pitched like a Game 1 starter Saturday night. Nova delivered an ace-like performance in relief of CC Sabathia, tossing seven scoreless innings in his first career postseason outing to lead the Yankees to a 9-2 win over the Tigers as the two teams completed Game 1 of the ALDS.
