ST. PETERSBURG As strange as it might sound, perhaps the best thing that could happen to the free-falling Tampa Bay Rays right now is a series against the first-place New York Yankees. A head-to-head showdown with the AL East leaders at least offers the Rays a chance to make up lost ground and get their feet back on it. And on the bright side, they're catching the Yankees at a time when stellar lefthanders CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte are on sidelined with injuries. They've also got recent history on their side, having won seven straight home games against the Yankees their longest stretch ever against them. One thing's for sure, the Rays need something to change starting with a more productive offense when they host the New York for a three-game set starting tonight at 7:10 p.m., the team they swept to start the 2012 season at Tropicana Field. Seems like eons ago, in light of the just-completed series with Detroit, whose 5-3 victory Sunday at the Trop gave th...

Timing perfect for Rays' win over Yankees

ST. PETERSBURG There's something about Matt Moore and the New York Yankees. Heck, there's something about the Yankees and Tropicana Field that seems to bring out the best in the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays' rookie lefthander made his big-league debut against New York last September and picked up the win with a standout performance. Monday night, Moore faced the Yankees...

This time, Rays take advantage of gaffe

One of main reasons the Tampa Bay Rays have been struggling is the number of mistakes they've made, especially at key times. Monday, they were on the other side of it as an error by New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira led to their 4-3 win. The key play was a ground ball that skipped past Teixeira's glove during a seventh-inning rally. "A much more difficult...

HOVG Heroes: Brett Butler

SAM FULD on BRETT BUTLERIf you put a gun to my head and asked me if I thought Brett Butler deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, I’d have to admit that he probably falls a bit short. He never finished above seventh in MVP voting, he made only one All-Star team and was never really regarded as the best at his position at any point in his career. Shoot, he only made a measly $23.8M...
