Found February 13, 2012 on The Outside Corner:
Cuban refugee Yoenis Cespedes has finally ended the infatuation many teams have had for him for months, and he's signed with the Oakland Athletics. The terms are four years, and $36 million. Yahoo's Tim Brown first reported the signing, while ESPN's Buster Olney reported the terms. The A's weren't really a player in the Cespedes talks that we knew about. Most sources had the Marlins and Cubs as the odds-on favorites to sign the 26 year-old, but much like they did with Michael Ynoa a few years ago, Oakland swooped in at the last minute and made the best offer for the youngster. Cespedes is the masher that the A's were looking for in their outfield, which until today, featured a host of platoon players like Collin Cowgill, Jonny Gomes, Seth Smith, and Josh Reddick in the corners with Coco Crisp starting in center. It's also worth noting that the $36 million that Oakland will pay Cespedes over the next four years is slightly less than the $38.7 million co...

Olney: 'Framework' for Burnett deal in place

Pirates and Yankees have a framework of a possible AJ Burnett deal in place, and they are now working through conditions of that framework. — Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) February 12, 2012 That would make it sound a lot like a deal is just about done, but then Olney went on to say that the deal isn't done and the two sides haven't agreed on players or money. So how...

Feet (and Back) of Clay

I notice that two prominent Sox watchers, Buster Olney yesterday and Nick Cafardo on WEEI this morning, cited Chay Buchholz as a key to Red Sox success. That could be a coincidence, or one or the other could have heard the other say it, but it's interesting. And a little worrisome. An injured back is no small thing for any player, let alone a pitcher. But at least it's never...

A Stubborn Gus

This is a new expression for me. I guess it refers to the famous mule? Buster Olney talks to ESPN Boston:"I've gotten to know Roy [Oswalt] and he's a stubborn Gus. He wants to have it his way. ... Even if the Red Sox have the highest offer on the table, I think Roy is going to pitch where he wants to pitch, and that's either in Dallas with the Rangers or it'...

Many teams still pursuing Jorge Soler

With fellow Cuban Yoenis Cespedes’ surprises signing with the A’s earlier this week, teams are now focusing on Jorge Soler. The Cubs, Marlins, Phillies, Red Sox Rangers and Yankees are currently vying for the 19-year-old outfielder’s service. The Cubs are the clear front runners as of now, however, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the Yankees

Yankees have serious interest in Soler

The New York Yankees aren’t going to let everyone else have all the fun when it comes to Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler. They sat out the Yoenis Cespedes sweepstakes knowing the price tag is way out of their budget but did anyone really think they’ll sit out the bidding on a 19-year old prospect? A prospect who is 6’3 and 200 pounds with five-tool potential? I was hoping...
