The Washington Nationals have played all season without cleanup hitter Michael Morse. Now their No. 3 hitter, Ryan Zimmerman, might join Morse on the disabled list.

Zimmerman is scheduled to have his sore right shoulder examined Friday in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and he probably will receive an injection. Depending upon ElAttrache's verdict, the Nationals could put Zimmerman on the DL.

The team has diagnosed Zimmerman with an inflamed AC joint. Zimmerman tried to take batting practice Thursday in San Diego but felt no improvement in the ailment that has sidelined him for a week, so he sat out again.

"He's our best player, my three-hole hitter," manager Davey Johnson told reporters. "I don't like the idea of him missing another 10 days, but if that's what's going to be the best for him to be not missing any time and get it cleared up, we'll take that course."

Zimmerman is hitting .224 with one homer and seven RBI through 15 games.

"Hopefully it'll just continue to get a little bit better," Zimmerman told reporters before Thursday's game. "It's easier to take your time when you're 14-4, so we got that going, but it's frustrating. You work hard all offseason to get healthy. You go through something like this where you can't really do anything about it."

Chad Tracy played third base and manned the No. 3 batting-order slot Thursday, and he went 0-for-4 in the Nationals' 2-1 loss to the Padres.

After taking two of three in San Diego, the Nationals, like Zimmerman, head up the coast to Los Angeles. Washington will play three games at Dodger Stadium this weekend.
