When the 2011 season ended, all Trey McNutt was focused on was getting healthy. But in mid-October, the right-hander was surprised to learn he was being mentioned as the player to be named in compensation for Theo Epstein, who was rumored to be leaving the Red Sox to take over the Cubs as president of baseball operations.

Baseball America announces Chicago Cubs top ten prospects
Baseball America unveiled their list of the Chciago Cubs top ten prospects on Tuesday. There were few surprises on the list as Brett Jackson ranked as the top positional prospect and Trey McNutt was the top pitcher. McNutt struggled with his control at AA in 2011. He has improved his walk total in the Arizona Fall League but has struck out just eight batters in 18 innings....

With a Strong Spring, Chicago Cubs Top Prospect Trey McNutt Could Win a Rotation Spot
I remember when I went to Kane County Stadium 2 years ago to watch the Kane County Cougars (then an Oakland A’s affiliate) take on the Peoria Chiefs. On the mound was a young pitcher named Trey McNutt for the Chiefs. I knew McNutt was a late round draft pick so I didn’t expect to see what I saw that day.
