After Junior dos Santos put Cain Velasquez (pictured) to sleep in merely 64 seconds in their initial encounter, a humiliated Velasquez never offered up any excuses following the lone blemish on his résumé. He simply promised that he would reclaim the throne in their rematch. Speaking of their sequel, Velasquez kept his word. He dominated dos Santos like no man had ever done before. In fact, Velasquez admitted after the fight that he intentionally didn’t want to finish dos Santos off early in order to send a message leading into their inevitable trilogy. Following the bout, reports surfaced that dos Santos was having personal issues during his camp, that he gassed out due to over training, etc. There was also that whole, “Cain hits like a girl” thing, even though dos Santos’ face was a bloody and battered mess after the rematch. Speaking of “Cigano’s” messed up mug, Velasquez unleashed the same destruction on his rival in Saturday’s rubber match. Only this time, after dominating dos Santos for most of the fight, he was able to finish him in the 5thRound. The TKO stoppage is something Velasquez is really taking pride in. “Yeah, I’m definitely satisfied,” Velasquez stated at the post-fight press conference. “Hopefully, no more excuses on his part. That’s it, you know? “We don’t look for the finish, we just look to keep putting pressure on. Keep doing what we’re doing, and if a finish happens, it happens. We’re not looking for it.” Dos Santos wasn’t able to attend the presser because he was rushed to the hospital immediately after their shootout. Early reports indicate that he’ll be fine. Velasquez, meanwhile, now joins UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, Andrei Arlovski, Tim Sylvia and Brock Lesnar as the Octagon’s only heavyweight champions to defend the throne two times in a row. According to White, Fabricio Werdum is tentatively up next for Velasquez.
