In January, the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced they had created a clear set of athlete guidelines, or Conduct Policy, to memorialize the values held by the planet’s premier mixed martial arts organization. Former UFC welterweight champ and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was given the formal moniker of UFC VP of athlete development and government relations to help spearhead the conduct policy charge. Well, Matt Mitrione was in desperate need of Hughes’ guidance Monday when he went on an extended non-politically correct tirade about transgender fighter Fallon Fox. Fox’s situation was already controversial enough, but Mitrione doused additional fuel onto the white-hot fire by constantly referring to the male-turned-female as a “he” throughout the interview and calling her a “sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak” – among many other things. Some believed Mitrione was completely out of line, while others thought the heavyweight did nothing wrong because he was merely evoking his right to freedom of speech. While the First Amendment of the United States Constitution gives every American the right to say what they please, it doesn’t mean there won’t be consequences for what comes out of your mouth. The UFC suspended Mitrone’s contract shortly after his interview on “The MMA Hour.” As with every multimillion-dollar corporation, professional sports or otherwise, their employees are held to a standard code of conduct to represent themselves and their employer in a positive light.
