Looks like Josh Rosenthal won’t be celebrating 4/20 this year. It appears Rosenthal’s MMA refereeing career may have gone up in smoke after pleading guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute.

According to court documents obtained by MMAJunkie on Wednesday, Rosenthal was arrested last year on felony charges after authorities raided an Oakland, California warehouse owned by Rosenthal and an associate and confiscated 1,356 marijuana plants.

The street value of the weed was roughly $6 million.

Rosenthal initially pleaded not guilty to the charges in October, but changed his tune in January as part of a plea agreement.

Under terms of the deal, prosecutors are recommending 37 months in jail, fines and five years of probation, during which he would be subject to random searches. Without the plea, Rosenthal faced 10 years to life in prison, a $10 million fine and a minimum of five years probation.

Rosenthal is scheduled for sentencing May 17.

Quite a sticky icky predicament for one of MMA’s top refs.

  • his warehouse is in the wrong state. stupid that the stuff is not legal. what better way to paid the taxes for this country.
  • This is criminal not the marijuana. There are dispensaries and delivery stores all over my area in Sacramento and the entire state, somebody has to grow it, it is not that many plants really considering demand for the legal product! The only reason 1500 plants are worth $ 6million dollars is because it was illegal! Imagine if watermelons or apples were illegal, they would be $50 an apple too,an orchard would sound like a billion dollar enterprise! I can see if there was tax dodging but that is not mentioned here and certainly would have had stiffer consequences, 3 years of a mans life in a prison for this non violent alleged offense is what offends me as an American. Try sitting in a closet with a light bulb on alone for 23 hours and for 1 hour MAYBE let yourself walk around the back yard 30 times in circles and go back to your closet.
Oh yes, there are homicidal killers, serial killers, sociopaths, the dregs of the earth there that do belong there and they want to rape you too!Is this what we want? What in the world did he do to deserve to be destroyed?
The set up of if you assert your rights you must be penalized is anti American and makes many criminals out of those who are not but unwilling to roll the dice on a potential lifetime sentence! or even 10 yrs, he should be able to go to trial knowing if he loses he has the punishment initially offered by the DA, This is a brave soul who would ever assert their rights in this scenario no matter how innocent you were!
    This sickens and saddens me.
