Hey, Rich Franklin (Pictured). If all of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too? NOPE! Despite the fact several of his fellow aging UFC stars have found the fountain of youth by legally obtaining Testosterone Replacement Therapy from their physicians, the former middleweight champ refuses to dabble in the controversial treatment. Although a measly doctor’s note is all it takes to make TRT legal, the thought of being seen in the wrong light is more than enough to deter Franklin from exploiting the loophole. “The public perception of TRT is that it’s cheating,” Franklin told ESPN.com. “The moment I said I was actually thinking about it, I started getting quite a bit of backlash.” The cheater’s handbook for TRT suggests athletes are manipulating the regimen while preparing for a fight. They will jack up their testosterone levels beyond normal ranges in order to push their bodies to its outermost limit. As showtime steadily approaches, they will then taper off the treatment to get their testosterone back to a natural level – therefore, no flunked drug tests. Furthermore, despite hitting the ripe age of 38 earlier this month, Franklin doesn’t feel his game has slipped to the point where he needs foreign substances to rejuvenate his skills. “I don’t believe I’ve dropped off with my speed or strength or any of that,” Franklin said. “You can’t look at my last fight and say, ‘Yeah, Rich has lost a step and is looking older.’ “When that day comes, perhaps I will consider quitting or possibly taking TRT. More than likely, in my mind, I’ll choose retirement over the necessity of TRT to continue.” Franklin and his non-TRT taking self meets Cung Le November 10th when the Octagon takes its talents to China.
