Strikeforce Scott Coker

Despite the fact UFC president Dana White stepped in to spearhead talks between Strikeforce and Showtime in October, nothing has materialized in regards to a contract extension with the premium cable network. During Tuesday’s conference call, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker (Pictured) stated the two sides are still stuck in a stalemate.

“There’s nothing to announce, but I’m optimistic at this point,” Coker expressed. “We’ll just have to wait and see, but I think things are going well and I think we’ll have something to announce shortly.”

In September, White claimed Showtime had another month to decide if they wanted to renew or cancel a five-year broadcast agreement they arranged back in February of 2009. It was initially reported Strikeforce had roughly two years remaining on their current deal with Showtime. However, during a follow up conference call, it was clarified that their broadcast partnership could be extended until 2014 if the option was picked up.

Showtime hosts their next Strikeforce broadcast on December 17th. Although the trusty rumor mill professes a January 7th show is also in the works, Coker wasn’t able to provide any information on that situation, either.

“Right now we don’t have anything to announce on that fight card,” Coker added. “There’s still some details to work out, so that’s still a pending event.

“If it does happen, we’re gonna go for it and promote the heck out of it. To me, the most important thing when you’re promoting an event is the last six weeks. So we still have time to get this thing activated.”

Well, according to my calendar there’s 32 days until game time. So it appears Strikeforce is buried behind the 8-ball. Either way, the clock is ticking – not just on the January show but possibly the organization’s future, as well.
