When Darude's "Sandstorm" hits the loud speakers in the Saitama Super Arena tonight, it'll be the first time Wanderlei Silva will be making the walk to trade hands and knees in Japan since 2006.
The signature handroll, the lethal stare down, the infamous muay thai clinch that's victimized many a man... let's face it - everytime "The Axe Murderer" goes to battle it's an event. How good is it to see Silva back where he had his most success headlining another show? So before we see Wand make more history tonight, let's take a walk down memory lane, something we're going to be doing a lot around here in the coming weeks.
If you took the time to Google "greatest one sided rivalries in combat sports history" I'd imagine Wanderlei Silva vs. Kazushi Sakuraba may show up. Well if it didn't before, it certainly will now. The unique theater of the beloved Kazushi Sakuraba mixed with the killer instinct of Wanderlei Silva amidst his 18-fight unbeaten streak was PRIDE at it's finest. Heading into the third contest Wanderlei was already up two to zip on the scoreboard with two TKO finishes over Saku, one by way of a knees and soccer kick combo, the other via doctors stoppage. So what would be on the menu for their third meeting?
The playlist below follows the two living legends backstage, shows us their walk outs - Saku's are always worth a revisit - and of course gives us the fight in it's entirety.

It looked good on paper. Never judge a book by its cover. Insert another predictable idiom here. After Hyun Gyu Lim made his presence felt it turned out to be a pretty disappointing night in terms of violence. 8 straight decisions ;ater it was up to the big boys to close things out with a bang. Saying they did just fine. would be an understatement. This was one of the exciting closes...
