alves kampmannWhether you just have a short downtime during work, or don't want a lengthy breakdown, these “Quick Breaks” are for you. "Quick Breaks" are short breakdowns of upcoming fights. In a summed up focus of strengths, weaknesses and variables; this will analyze what could happen in the fight, and end with this writer’s prediction.

This Friday, the UFC will return to Sydney, Australia and put on the second event hosted on the FX network. Headlining the card is a welterweight showdown between Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann, but this card is unique for having the entire semifinals for the Flyweight inaugural belt on the main card as well.

In the main event you have Alves vs. Kampmann. Both men are known for coming in and giving a good fight, and both are looking to get back into the upper echelon of the 170lbs division. Kampmann is 18-5 and Alves is 19-8. Alves has shown he has great hands and pairs it with his explosive power. Most of his wins have come by KO/TKO and after having a not-so-stellar past few years, he’s looking to get back into a good winning streak. His hands will determine the outcome of this fight, if Kampmann can’t take this to the ground.

Kampmann has great striking as well, but he holds an advantage in the ground game. He may want to trade with Alves, but his better option is probably to utilize his submissions to win the fight.

Prediciton: Thiago Alves wins via TKO in the 1st or 2nd Round.

Before the main event takes place, four men will enter and fight in the semifinals of the Flyweight tournament, and only two will emerge to face each other for the title.

First up you have Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall. Johnson is 14-2 coming off a loss, and McCall is 11-2 on a four-fight winning streak. Momentum goes to “Uncle Creepy”. DJ has shown his quick hands and relentless pace in his fights, and will pose a unique threat to the UFC newcomer.

The fact McCall has never fought on a stage this big may be a mental factor. However, because McCall has been fighting at Flyweight for a while, he may have an advantage of physical familiarity. Both men are finishers and exciting fighters, and are hard to put away.

Prediction: Demetrious Johnson wins via TKO early or by unanimous decision.

The second tier of the tournament is Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro **********. It is notable that Benavidez has only lost decisions to current Bantamweight champ, Dominick Cruz and ********** has only been finished once in 29 fights. Both men are exciting fighters, but their styles are opposing. ********** has proved his hands can bring him success, whereas Benavidez has a dangerous submission game.

Benavidez is 15-2 and on a three-fight winning streak, and ********** is 19-4-6 on a five-fight streak. Both men are highly motivated; but similarly to the other semifinal, ********** may have an advantage of already fighting at 125lbs for his career, but also has never fought inside the Octagon. The Debut Curse doesn’t claim all, but you never know until they step into the cage.

Prediction: Joseph Benavidez wins via Submission in 1st round, or by unanimous decision.
