Denny Hamlin sustained an incredible impact on the final lap of Sunday’s Auto Club 400. Luckily for Hamlin, NASCAR has made safety advancements since the death of Dale Earnhardt in 2001, because had it not been for the new style of racecar, or the Hans device who knows what we would be talking about today.
Hamlin was held overnight at a local area hospital in California, and there wasn’t a word from anyone at Joe Gibbs Racing or Hamlin himself on Twitter until Hamlin Tweeted the following at 11:14 AM:
“I just want to go home”
Moments later, the word came through as to what injuries Hamlin sustained following his crash in turn four of the final lap. Hamlin who was heard screaming “My back, my back, my back” on his team’s radio when asked if he was okay following the crash, was diagnosed with a compression fracture of the L1 vertebrae. It is the top vertebrae in the lumbar section of the lower back....
