If you were judge how Jimmie Johnson would qualify based off his result in the first practice session Friday at Texas Motor Speedway, you wouldn’t have thought he’d have much of a chance at the top-spot. Posting the 27th-fastest time, Johnson went out for his timed lap in the middle of the session, shooting straight to the top of the board. Typical, yes, with the way NASCAR qualifying order is set based on practice speeds starting with the slowest car going first and the fastest car going last, in theory every car that qualifies should be faster than the previous. Not on Friday, though. Johnson’s lap around the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway averaging over 191 mph was enough to give the five-time Sprint Cup champion back-to-back pole positions. Last weekend at Martinsville Speedway, Johnson started from the pole and led the most laps in the 500-lap race en route to his fourth victory on the 2012 campaign. In the process, he also took the point lead away from Brad Keselowski who will ...

JJ, Keselowski may face tiebreaker

Who feels the pressure the most in the Chase for the Sprint Cup - drivers, crew chiefs or pit crews? All of them are sharing equally in their own little world. Having been in that situation when I was a crew chief with Cale Yarborough, and then gaining more responsibility as it moved forward with Darrell Waltrip, you equally share that responsibility. You count on one another to...

Johnson holds off Keselowski in win

Jimmie Johnson regained the lead on the final restart, beating Brad Keselowski in an ending two-lap shootout to win Sunday at Texas and add to his NASCAR Sprint Cup points lead with two races left. Johnson led 168 laps, but found himself chasing toward the end. The third restart in the late laps proved to be the charm for No. 48 Chevrolet. During that restart on the 333rd of 334...

Sprint Cup contenders stay positive

When it comes to matters of the mind, NASCAR teams will go to great lengths to psyche out opponents. Trash talk? That's for amateurs. Buzzing another driver on the track? Usually that does more damage than good. With the battle between Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson coming down to three final events, the head games have escalated in the garage. But not to the degree you...

Brad Keselowski ready to tussle at Texas as points race heats up

Brad Keselowski doesn't seem to mind being given short shrift, even when it comes to gauging his chances of hoisting the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship trophy three races from now. The underdog label seems to suit him well. While Keselowski's four-week hold on the series lead is gone -- left in the hands of five-time series champ Jimmie Johnson -- his motivation is in...

Keselowski doesn't want to waste Cup title chance

Brad Keselowski was teammates with Jimmie Johnson for a handful of races a few years ago, and once drove a car owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Johnson won an unprecedented five consecutive Sprint Cup championships before that streak ended last year. Keselowski is wrapping up only his third full season at NASCAR's highest level and should have plenty more title chances. They arrived...

Jimmie Johnson’s Superstition Pays Off, Takes Fourth Pole of 2012; Keselowski To Start Eighth

Photo Credit: Tom Pennington/Getty Images for NASCAR By: Toby Christie – Follow on Twitter @Tobalical There is a new superstition that point leader Jimmie Johnson has utilized since last week in Martinsville. When he posts the fastest time in qualifying, he doesn’t exit his car until he’s either knocked off the pole, or he officially is the pole winner. His superstition is...

How many drivers still in title hunt?

NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup is now definitely no more than a four-horse race. My gut tells me it's a two-horse race and that's the two guys at the top separated by only two points. Everyone keeps waiting for one of those guys to have a really bad race. So far, the only blemish that points leader Jimmie Johnson has had was the 17th-place finish after the crash at...

Texas: NASCAR green flag start time, pole, and starting lineup

NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Jimmie Johnson is on the pole again. Johnson is the top qualifier for the race at Texas Motor Speedway after a fast lap of 191.076 mph Friday.
