Race Review Online:
Richmond, VA- Big time controversy happened at the end of tonight’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Richmond International Raceway.
With seven laps-to-go Clint Bowyer spun exiting Turn 4 of the 400 lap race.
The issue is Ryan Newman was winning at the time and Bowyer’s Michael Waltrip Racing Teammate Martin Truex Jr. was running seventh.
If it had ended that way which it was likely going to, Truex would be on the outside looking in for the Chase for the Cup.
Everyone is saying Bowyer spun on purpose to help his teammate out.
After ABC showed the replay with in car audio and an in car camera it sure looked like he did. He just turned the wheel off the corner which is a perfect spot to do so where he wouldn’t make any contact with the wall bringing out a caution.
Knowing how the Spring race went here where the cars without new tires at the end of the race dropped quicker than a weighted item the leaders all had to pit. Newman came out of the pits fifth and could only make it up to third in the last three laps while Truex finished seventh. That made it a tie between the two and Truex got in the Chase.
After knowing all of that, it seems very fishy.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. who was running behind Bowyer at the time of the incident said it was the “Weirdest thing he’s ever seen.” He said Bowyer looked like he was on the brake and gas at the same time causing him to lose it right in front of him. He went on to say he was all over the place that lap and looked strange.
ABC’s NASCAR experts agreed saying it looked like Bowyer spun on purpose to bring out the caution.
We will never know at the end of the day whether he did so on purpose but reality is if he didn’t spin Newman and Jeff Gordon would be in the Chase while Bowyer’s teammate Truex Jr. would be on the outside looking in.
All signs are pointing at this being on purpose.
