Ryan Newman and Matt Borland can each showcase a smile after their first race together as driver and crew chief since 2006. The pair were looking to pick up where they left off when they won 12 races together between 2002 and 2006, but a tight race car brought the team crashing back to reality early at Martinsville Speedway.
Newman slowly but surely tanked through the running order all day long, after a pitstop on lap 375 he had plummeted all the way to 28th – two laps off the pace – from the 17th starting position. But with less than 125 of the scheduled 500 laps remaining, the No. 39 team put on their rally caps.
Newman utilized two wave-arounds on lap 393 and on lap 440 to get back on the lead lap, and Matt Borland finally found some magic adjusting the race car. It was from there that Newman had new life, and the car was finally good enough to make something happen. When the che...
