The pair were looking to pick up where they left off when they won 12 races together between 2002 and 2006, but a tight race car brought the team crashing back to reality early at Martinsville Speedway. Newman slowly but surely tanked through the running order all day long, after a pitstop on lap 375 he had plummeted all the way to 28th – two laps off the pace – from the 17th starting position. But with less than 125 of the scheduled 500 laps remaining, the No. 39 team put on their rally caps. Newman utilized two wave-arounds on lap 393 and on lap 440 to get back on the lead lap, and Matt Borland finally found some magic adjusting the race car.
