“What happened to me Saturday night is the toughest thing I’ve ever gone through in any kind of racing in my 30 years of driving because of the way everything went down,” Ryan Newman said in a press release from Richard Childress Racing on Monday afternoon.
Looks like Newman can turn that frown upside down as NASCAR has announced that Newman will replace Martin Truex, Jr. in the Chase for the Sprint Cup as part of penalties against Michael Waltrip Racing. MWR has suspected of manipulating the outcome of Saturday’s race at Richmond International Raceway, and according to NASCAR, the team did just that.
Newman stated he saw Clint Bowyer’s in-car video and heard the in-car audio late Saturday night and said it was “pretty obvious” that Bowyer spun intentionally .
Michael Waltrip Racing has been fined $300,000 and general manager Ty Norris has been suspended indefinitely. Truex, Bowyer, and Brian Vickers have been docked 50 points apiece.
