Start ‘N’ Park Blog is taking a look back at the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver by driver. This recap will take a look at the driver’s stats, the season’s highlights, the season’s lowlights, what a quick look at next year. This installment takes a look back at Brian Vickers who finished in the 35th place in the final standings. 2012 Statistics: Points: 250 Position: 35th Preseason Pick: N/A Starts: 8 Poles: 0 Wins: 0 Top 5s: 3 Top 10s: 5 DNFs: 1 Earnings: $774,435 What Was Said Prior To The Season: Nothing, had no idea Vickers would run in the 2012. What Happened In 2012: Vickers came out of nowhere (I suspect hiding)to lead 125 laps and finish fifth at Bristol in the #55 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing. In 2011, Vickers was crashing his way to the unemployment line, but in 2012 it was as if someone brainwashed him into a great driver. He qualified great at Martinsville, jus the finish didn’t reflect that, then went to Sonoma and placed fourth. Really? The place one year prior he and Tony Stewart got into a bumper cars match, Vickers brings it home fourth. New Hampshire was a slight hiccup finishing 15th, then Watkins Glen he had a fast car but blew the engine on lap number one. Bristol saw another fourth place finish, New Hampshire in the fall he was ninth, and he finished the season with an eighth at Martinsville. That was a 13.250 average finish in eight races for Vickers. On To 2013: Vickers did exactly what he needed to do in 2012 to set himself up for in 2013, that was run smart and clean. By doing so he was rewarded with a full-time Nationwide Series ride for Joe Gibbs Racing and another part-time schedule for Michael Waltrip Racing. He has a great shot at another Nationwide title and continuing to raise his stock for another crack at Sprint Cup.
