We really need to keep historical figures out of sports, because more often than not, some really dumb things end up being said. Usually, we have players, coaches or members of the media referencing Hitler is some stupid way, but the latest ignorant statement from Bill Simmons on his BS Report Podcast had to do with Martin Luther King, Jr., and his impact on how the Memphis Grizzlies cheer for their team. Yes, we are dead serious about this. Simmons was speaking with Jalen Rose on the podcast and somehow the talk turned into the Lorraine Motel, where MLK was shot and killed. Simmons used this as an example of impending doom that the people of Memphis experience, even while watching their favorite basketball team: “I didn’t realize the effect [The MLK assassination] had on that city…I think from people we talk to and stuff we’ve read, the shooting kind of sets the tone with how the city thinks about stuff.
