PLAYERS: Brad Stevens
TEAMS: Boston Celtics
With the current salary cap situation, and with signing Avery Bradley to his new extension, odds are that the Boston Celtics will not be very active in the free agent market. However, if they do decide to pursue some free agents, there are a few out on the market that would be a great fit in Boston. Lance Stephenson Lance Stephenson The case for: He thinks he is the best player on the court at any given time. We have seen him go toe to toe with LeBron and show he belongs in the upper echelon of talent in the NBA. He would be a great fit with the Celtics, and Brad Stevens could be the coach that is able to keep in him check while simultaneously bringing out the most in him. It’s astounding that at only 23-years old, he is already an unrestricted free agent. With how much potential he’s already shown, and the right coaching and role, the Celtics could lock up a superstar before he hits his prime, which is very rare for the NBA. The case against: He thinks he is the best player on the court at any given time. Yes, that is what makes him a great fit, but at the same time, Stephenson causes headaches. He is going to do one or two things a year that will make you shake your head and wonder why you signed him. He will make choke signs at other players. He will blow in other player’s ears. Or at least he will do those things to LeBron. Other’s may see his antics as childish and immature, and even though they probably are, every team needs a player that plays a little recklessly, especially one who will do that while playing against the best player in the league. Channing Frye Channing Frye Frye, by multiple metrics, was one of the top ten power forwards in the league last year. As we have discussed previously, the Celtics are in desperate need of upgrading at power forward. Frye is also capable of playing center if the Celtics want to play small ball. Last season, Frye produced a solid 11.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, to go along with shooting 37% from behind the arch. Frye provides an instant upgrade at a position of need. Andrew Bynum Andrew Bynum This would be a huge gamble. Bynum hasn’t had a relevant basketball moment in over two years and has been a hindrance to the teams that have taken a chance on him. But because of that, the Celtics could offer him a minimum contract for a year and take the risk. Worst case scenario, he doesn’t play, ruins a practice or two, and gets cuts. No harm done. Best case scenario, you have a center who two years ago, was considered second to only Dwight Howard. Bynum is only 26 years old, if it works out, and if Bynum shows the motivation, the Celtics can pick up a center, in is prime, at a cheap discount. If the Celtics do decide to test the market, Stephenson, Frye, and possibly Bynum, could provide solid options for the front office to consider.
