Sad news from the NBA,

ESPN has confirmed reports that Portland Trail Blazers shooting guard Brandon Roy will be forced to retire from basketball due to a degenerative knee injury.

The three time All Star was the sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft, and averaged 22.6 and 21.5 points per game in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

It was rumored earlier that Roy was a potential target for the amnesty clause but the Blazers declined to apply the tag on the 27 year old.

This is the same franchise that has dealt with the ongoing knee troubles of first overall pick Greg Oden.
