Remember when the Brooklyn Nets beat the Knicks and ESPN and others tripped over themselves promoting the Nets as the next best thing in New York? Well, of course they're ranked behind Tebow in the "List of things ESPN hypes that don't deserve to be hyped." That was until last night when the Knicks beat the Nets again for the 2nd time in two weeks. Here's the actual opening paragraph from AP's recap of the late November matchup between the Knicks and Nets:NEW YORK -- They share a city, first place and now the belief that this new-look, New York matchup could be a real rivalry. And what a stirring start to it for the Nets and Knicks. The Nets won the crowd -- and the game -- in the first meeting in Brooklyn, pulling out a 96-89 overtime victory on Monday night to tie the Knicks atop the Atlantic Division on a breakthrough night for their franchise. And then there was this written by ESPN writer Ian O'Connor:Only there was plenty to worry about as the Knicks boarded their buses out of Brooklyn as 96-89 overtime losers, and as co-tenants with the 9-4 Nets atop the Atlantic Division standings. Even the elitist Manhattanites who wanted to cling to their share of first place had to concede that the Nets had just earned a head-to-head tiebreaker advantage in a way their fans will never forget.Since that game, the Nets have gone 4-8, including last nights loss to the Knicks, 100-86, and another loss to the Knicks on December 11. Included in the 4-8 record are losing streaks of five and their current three-game skid.I know ESPN is located near New York, but their insentice in creating rivalries with New York teams where one doesn't exist, is painful. Until the Nets can actually sustain winning over the course of a season, let's calm down about a "rivalry."
