At some point this season the Cavaliers believe they will at long last have a deep and talented corps of players who can rotate at center.
That point became more distant in the future however when Tyler Zeller had an appendectomy Friday. The 7-foot second-year player already was recovering from a hip injury suffered during an intrasquad scrimmage. Now his return to the court is unknown. Zeller has been discharged from the hospital but his recovery will not be accelerated for the sake of basketball.
With fellow 7-footer Andrew Bynum still sitting out as he rehabilitates from March knee surgery – and no timetable on his return to 5-on-5 drills – the Cavaliers are down to a list of centers that features oft-injured Anderson Varejao and a bunch of guys fighting for a roster spot in training camp.
