From ProBasketballTalk.com:

The Boston Globe reported Sunday that the Celtics might consider Josh Howard as a free agent when, you know, free agency happens. It’s actually a pretty solid idea.

Howard playing small forward of course causes complications with Jeff Green who will probably spend quite a bit of time at the small forward spot (since he’s a horrid rebounder) behind Paul Pierce. But in a smaller lineup, Howard could play next to Green. Howard fits in from multiple perspectives, and seems like the kind of guy the Celtics would take a flyer on.

This is a name that we have heard thrown around here over the last couple off seasons. When Josh Howard was healthy, he was a very good scorer and gave some decent rebounding numbers from the small forward position. One thing that has derailed his career has been injuries as he’s never played an entire 82-game season. Whether there are actually 82 (or any) games in the 2011-2012 season is another discussion.

What I am getting at is Howard is an injury waiting to happen. He’s coming off an ACL injury and is supposedly fully recovered, but aren’t there better options? Here’s a few unrestricted free agents that I would prefer to sign over Josh Howard at the same position: Shane Battier, Jamal Crawford, Grant Hill, Tayshaun Prince and Jason Richardson. All five of them have better health at this time in their respective careers. Some are better shooters and scorers than Josh Howard while a couple are still dominant defenders. All of these free agents are viable options for the Celtics.

If we were not able to sign any of the above listed free agents, Josh Howard would be a decent fall-back plan, assuming he’s healthy. One problem is if Jeff Green is expected to take on an expanded role on this team, how do these two play together? Green would have to slide over to power forward, but is a terrible rebounder. If you control the glass, you control the game and throwing Howard and Green out there together definitely hinders your ability to rebound the basketball. We’ll see what Danny thinks if/when there is a free agent signing period this year.
