Preseason, we hardly knew you.

With three days to go before the season opener in New York, the Celtics began the process of trimming their roster down. The first casualty was camp invitee Jamal Sampson, who saw the floor for only the final two minutes of last night's preseason finale. That leaves Boston with 16 bodies and 15 open roster spots.

However, the Celtics are only looking to carry 14 players on the roster so that they could add a free agent during the season. That means two of the three remaining camp invitees—Gilbert Brown, Greg Stiemsma and Michael Sweetney—won't be with the club on Christmas Day. I'd be floored if Stiemsma (aka The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread) wasn't on the opening day roster. Out of all of the invitees, he has been the most impressive and looked the most natural on the floor. He hasn't done anything eye-popping or mind-blowing, but he's simply doing his job and that's the kind of player Doc Rivers is looking to have on his bench.

As for Brown, who was basically stalked by Danny Ainge before the lockout began, he just hasn't shown any consistency on either end of the floor. He had a moment or two last night where you could see flashes of an NBA player, but they were marred by sloppy ball-handling and turnovers.

Sweetney, while he knows what he's doing on an NBA floor, has the physique of a guy who just ate Oliver Miller. The last thing that the Celtics want is another guy who can't keep his weight under control (see Glen Davis). The guy can eat up space—literally—and knows how to use his size, but it's just too much size.

Expect to see Stiemsma on the bench on Sunday, although who knows how much he'll actually play.
