PLAYERS: Chris Andersen
TEAMS: Denver Nuggets

Via Sportress of Blogitude:

Chris “Birdman” Andersen, the Denver Nuggets tatted-up, mohawked, freak-flag-flying forward, has been a longtime favorite here at the Sportress, so it is with great pride that I pass along the news that the Birdman has joined forces with PETA to cast a disparaging light upon the terrible things which occur in the Chinese fur business and how the animals are often horribly mistreated.

On Wednesday, as part of his new role as PETA spokesperson, Andersen visited a Denver area homeless shelter to distribute donated fur coats to the homeless, which a PETA news release argues are “the only people who have any excuse for wearing fur.” Got it.

Andersen says (via The Denver Post):

“These animals aren’t dying in a good way. I think everyone should be aware of that. It’s a nightmare,” he says in a PETA video. “These animals don’t deserve to be beaten or slaughtered. Check it out, look at the video PETA has put together with the investigations of what is going on in the Chinese world of fur farms. Be aware of what is going on behind the scenes. . . . And not to purchase the fur.”

Since I am not the kind of person who would buy a fur — for reasons that have to do with just as much for style purposes as animal rights issues — I fully support Andersen’s crusade to raise awareness. But does that mean I have to get a ginormous tattoo on my neck, too? I’m all for getting inked and already have a tattoo myself, but jeez, the neck? Call me a wuss, but that looks really painful. Also: I’m not too keen on getting inked on every square inch on my body, either, but I fully support and completely dig how Birdman rolls.

  • I never thought much of that creepy looking birdman, I even think less of him now.PETA is just a bunch of activists extremists looking for attention.
  • idiot.
  • Amen brother! I took my three year old son to the circus and they tried telling him how horrible the animals we're treated. I almost socked that PETA punk right then and there. Here is a true quote of how ignorant they can be.

"You don't really shoot those poor animals with a high powered rifle, do you?"
"No, I use a low powered rifle..."
    "Oh, OK!"
and they walk away content. True story.
  • This really gives PETA serious credibity??? Give me a break. This guy is a government certified idiot. PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals.
  • he is NOT an idiot, people like YOU are the idiot morons.
  • Well isn't that profound? Calling everyone idiots or morons because they haven't bought into the charade of "Animals Liberation". You should research on your precious PETA. They kill about 90% of the animals they receive each year. How is their euthanasia better than that of an Animal Shelter? Somehow more human? I think not. Also PETA takes your hard earned money and funnels it to help criminals and arsons who help with your "cause". I would think long and hard before labeling yourself as the epitome of hypocrisy. The Blind leading the stupid is all it is. One more anecdote to let you mull over, if a bear or cougar saw you in the woods, do you think he'd hesitate to eat you?
  • The comments posted by the above two short sighted morons is pathetic and laughable. If you had ANY idea what you we're talking about you wouldn't be so quick to brush this off. PETA works hard to keep the interests of animals in the public eye and to display the unnecessary abuse they often suffer through. If that does not bother you then you cease to be of importance to the human race and just serve as useless sacks sucking up oxygen. Maybe you two are afraid to check out the videos for fear it might actually get to you. Hmmmm. Interesting thought. As for Chris Andersen, his ad for PETA is awesome and brave at that. I applaud him and hope more athletes and others can use their platform to help the lives of animals. Even though I am a Bulls fan, I say Go Birdman and Go Nuggets!!! Screw the doubters!
  • I am sure that the so-called short sighted morons (one of them being my husband) do not believe in animals that are abused by their owners. Yes that is very sad and something needs to be done about it, but hunting in general is something people like us enjoy, and it is a way of providing for our family. People like you that are against hunting and try to take our rights away are the freakin morons. I don't protest and tell you that you have to eat meat!!
  • How about putting that effort into saving children! As a teacher, I stay awake at night worrying about the safety of the children I teach. At the very least many are not fed properly, many others are neglected and abused. Ink/mink is personal preference and doesn't really matter...children do.
  • I'm not sure if you realize ALAgang, but there are people out there who actually have compassion for BOTH children and animals. I should know...I'm one of them. Ink/mink may not matter to you, but it matters to me! I stay awake at night sometimes thinking of the hundreds of thousands of animals who don't have a voice...who have suffered terribly. And I think of the children who are forced to go to sleep hungry and scared. All animals and children are innocent and should therefore be treated with respect and compassion.
  • I live in Colorado and am a Nuggets fan. Chris Andersen does do alot of work to help children, he is known for doing alot of charity mostly for children in need. He was abused himself as a kid and had a messed up childhood. He trys to give back to the community and help everyone out...kids, adults, animals...anyone. He is just very compassionate for everyone. Their is nothing wrong with him trying to save animals as well.
  • I completely agree that animal abuse is dispicable. But where is the line on animal rights and animal liberation? PETA takes extreme measures to prove their points and my biggest problem is how quickly they condemn what they don't understand. I've raised dogs, cats, snakes, fish, goats, etc. and I love nature. I hunt and fish the land and appreciate everything about the animals kingdom but because I hunt I'm a horrible person? My culture is completely disrespected by the PETA organization.

Here, you should learn a little about him before you rag on him.
  • oh brother..what a bunch of idiots. Chris Anderson is showing what a REAL man is not afraid to stand up for. Animals cannot speak up or defend themselves, so they - like children - need PEOPLE to stand up and protect them, NOT get ridiculed for doing what is RIGHT.
  • well said, sportschick27 and kathy9. nice to hear from some thoughtful, insightful women for a change. thehunt, wth? the fur issue has nothing to do with hunters, hunting or your family pets, it's about the fur trade / fur industry, which is far and away a different issue. perhaps you should brush up on 1) your reading and comprehension, 2) the fur industry, 3) animal rights, and 4) peta - just for starters. the fact that people like you enjoy hunting animals doesn't matter one whit nor can the fur industry issue be compared to children's issues. apples and oranges and plums. many millions of people speak for children; very few speak for animals, which are the ONLY true innocents on this earth. get tats if you want, or don't, nobody really cares. but leave the animals' coats on the animals where they belong; they need them much worse than you do. huge kudos for Chris “Birdman” Andersen and peta, all of whom conduct themselves like intelligent and selfless people.
  • How can you compare a living child with an animal. That's disgusting and by the you should brush up on PETA. Lift the rose colored glasses off and their organization is not so peachy keen. They kill about 90% of the animals they receive and they donate YOUR money to help criminals who work for their cause.
  • It has everything to do with hunting when it comes to peta. They would rather have the elk and moose be all killed by the stinking wolves rather than control their numbers. I would rather be shot than a slow torture death by wolves. They want to stop hunting no matter the cost. They dont seem to care that hunters supply all the money to take care of the animals. So why dont you read up on things. PETA takes things to far.
  • HEY!!!! Last year at band camp .... we had BIRD.... man!
  • HEY!!!! Thats what it looks like when I SHOOT my BIRDS (turkeys) with a friggin paint ball gun!!!!!!!
  • HEYY WAIT! ONE MORE!! HEY! Last Year I had to clean the FRIGGIN THING !!! OH NO! badda bum
  • HHEEYYY... Before I go uuummmmmmm I hear he tastes better than HORSE!!! OH NO!! STOP eyyiiee
