The Boston Celtics are reportedly after Chris Kaman. (Sports Illustrated)

Sources close to the situation said the Hornets continue to talk to teams about a possible Kaman trade, with the Rockets, Warriors, Heat, Pacers and Celtics among those still interested. The Hornets, sources said, are looking for draft picks or young players to help build their foundation, and the odds appear slim that any of the teams will satisfy the league’s demands.

The only way a Chris Kaman trade realistically makes any sense — not saying it would be a good trade, just the only way it would make sense — is a swap for Paul Pierce. That would cut Boston’s salary considerably, giving Danny Ainge more cash to throw at free agents in the next two summers. (Note: This is where you throw rotten tomatoes at me. I understand. I even agree.)

Otherwise, there’s no point in surrendering assets to acquire Kaman. The Celtics aren’t title contenders and Kaman wouldn’t make them one.  He would make them better, yes. He an almost-double-double big whose one biggest strength, rebounding, happens to be one of Boston’s biggest weaknesses. But he doesn’t push the Celtics over the top, or even come close. And that being admitted, there’s no sense to trading away anything of worth in return for two months of Chris Kaman.
