Celtics owner, Wyc Grousbeck, called into Boston sports radio 98.5 The Sports Hub on Thursday and talked about the state of the team and possibilities for the future. Paul Pierce has been a favorite of Wyc through the years so, it's no surprise that he said that he wants Paul Pierce to return this season and to retire as a Celtic. He expressed that since the team lost in the first round, changes have to be made but that they might have to follow a multi-year plan to get back to being a contender. He mentioned the young core of Rondo, Green, Sullinger, and Bass and his hope to get KG and Pierce back with them with the plan of reloading as they go. Wyc talked about looking at the trade and free-agent markets and seeing what was out there and that it was unlikely that they would make any decisions on the roster or the team's direction before late June. June 30 is the deadline to decide on whether to pick up the team option on Paul Pierce's contract and that is obviously the big decision as it will determine the direction that the team will be going in. Wyc echoed Danny's thoughts that Doc was returning but also admitted that he hadn't spoken to Doc. But he expects him to help Danny with the draft workouts, making the draft pick, and through free agency. In spite of questions remaining about his status, Doc was in Waltham today for the draft workouts, which bears out what Doc and Wyc both have said. And this is where the curious phrasing comes in. From the ESPN Boston story: Grousbeck deferred to Ainge on questions about trades, but hinted late in the 15-minute interview that he wants to keep the core together, so long as there's a way to supplement them beyond the return of Rondo and Sullinger from injuries. "I want to retire Paul’s number, but I don’t want to do it any time soon because I want him to keep playing for us, to be honest," said Grousbeck. "I want KG back. I want Doc back. I’d love to have Rondo back. I just want to get them more help, that’s my going-in assumption." First he states he wants KG back. He wants Doc back. And then the curious phrase "I'd love to have Rondo back." That makes me think that he feels that Rondo's going somewhere and he'd love to have him back but.... Maybe I'm reading too much into it. That's certainly possible. But it's just a curious way to phrase it. Maybe the parade of point guards in the work outs and the rumors that the Celtics are the team that gave Schroeder a guarantee signal the fact that Danny might actually trade Rondo this offseason. But Wyc would love to have him back. [Discuss on CG Forums!]
