NBA fans have likely already made up their minds about Deron Williams and Dwight Howard. But now Williams has come clean and fessed up about he and Howard conspiring to play together all along.

With a deal that would send Dwight Howard to Brooklyn for little-to-nothing in the works, doesn’t this sort of comment by Williams seem like it must sting Magic fans just a little bit more.

“We’ve talked about playing together for years,” Williams said, “calling the opportunity to team up “a big part” of why Howard has requested that he be traded to Brooklyn.

It always seems as though the Miami Heat are viewed and players like Carmelo Anthony are portrayed as villains for their roles in seeking larger market cities, but if Howard lands in Brooklyn, he and Deron Williams may be the new face for the most hated athletes in the world.

“Whatever happens, happens,” he said. “I think we’ll have a good team without him. I think we’ll have an even better team with him….

“I think he likes the market, this market is a lot different than Orlando,” Williams said. “I think [building something new in Brooklyn] definitely intrigues him. It’s going to be huge.”

The mystique of playing in NYC is surely a factor for for Howard as he pursues an NBA championship and his own legacy. But at what cost?
