NBA fans will have to wait still for a Derrick Rose return. Seriously, I hate to tell you Chicago Bulls fans this, but the former league MVP might not be playing for awhile yet. Despite what you heard about his being cleared. “We’ll see when he’s ready,” Coach Tom Thibodeau said. “He’s getting there. He’s not quite there yet.” From the AP: Asked if Rose would be allowed to play if he felt he was able, Thibdodeau said, “We’ll cross that bridge when we get there. We’re just going day by day.” He was also noncommittal when asked if he expects Rose to play this season, saying the Bulls are prepared either way. The last time Derrick Rose spoke publicly, he brought up the very real prospect of not playing this season “I’m feeling good, but like I said, if it’s where it’s taking me a long time and I’m still not feeling right, I don’t mind missing this year,” he said. “I would love to [return]. I would love to. That’s why I approached my rehab and my workout so hard. I’m trying to get back on the court as quickly as possible, but if I have anything lingering on, it’s no point.” That’s the quote heard ’round the Chi on February 13th. It’s been a month since then and Rose has reintegrated into the team, sitting on the bench for games and getting closer to normal. He’s also practicing without restriction. However, he doesn’t want to play until he can dunk off his left foot. And you know what a fierce competitor Derrick Rose is; he’s not going to return unless he’s 110%. So even though doctors have indeed cleared him, it doesn’t signal a Derrick Rose return. A Derrick Rose return would be monumental, as it would probably get the slightly above mediocre Bulls a NBA playoff series win or two. But it won’t get them past the Miami Heat this year. Paul M.
