Chicago Bulls News – The next time you see Derrick Rose play competitive basketball on the United Center floor he might be wearing a different uniform. No, he won’t be wearing another NBA team’s uniform but he might be wearing red, white, and blue. USA Basketball announced their training schedule for the men’s team as they prepare for the FIBA World Cup of Basketball. On August 16th, USA will go against Brazil in an exhibition game at the United Center. Exhibition Games This means a few Chicago natives and members of USA Basketball will be making their homecoming; USA head coach Mike Krzyzeski and USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo were raised in Chicago. Also, Derrick Rose, an Englewood native, is among the pool of 28 players trying to find a spot on the FIBA World Cup team. Team USA will be playing exhibition games in Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, and Gran Canaria. This will be a good appetizer for Team USA before the main course, The FIBA World Cup of Basketball in Spain which takes place from August 30th to September 14th. Coach K had this to say about the exhibition games Per USA TODAY, “The 2014 USA National Team tour will offer our players and coaches the opportunity to get familiar with each other and to gain critical international game experience against a variety of differing styles,” Krzyzewski said in a statement. “Playing games at the Thomas & Mack Center, the United Center, Madison Square Garden and in Gran Canaria will be memorable for fans and valuable preparation for our team prior to competing in the FIBA World Cup.” What this means for Derrick Rose Derrick Rose has made it known that he would like to play in the FIBA World Cup if he is healthy. Team USA’s training camp begins July 28th and Rose should be 100% healthy by that time. Hell, he’s probably be healthy enough now but who knows with Rose these days. It can’t hurt for Rose to play some competitive basketball before training camp opens for the Bulls next fall. This past season when Rose came back from his first injury, he looked rusty and out of sync at times. In ten games Rose averaged 15.9 points and 4.3 assists per game, well below his career averages of 20.8 points and 6.8 assists per game.Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau who is also an assistant coach for Team USA, is hopeful Rose can play this summer. Per Slam Online, “Well, I’m hopeful that he will participate and he’ll be selected, but a lot depends on where his health is,” Thibodeau explained. “But I thought it was a great experience for him in the past. I know how much he enjoyed it. I know how USA Basketball feels about him. I think it’s a great honor and a privilege, and hopefully it’ll work out.” Best Case/Worst Case Scenario There is always the elephant in the room: what if Rose gets injured again? A perfectly legitimate concern with Rose’s series of leg injuries with two significant surgeries over the last two years; one more serious leg injury could be the end of Rose’s career. This is obviously the worst-case scenario for Bulls fans. The best-case scenario is Rose starts to get back to MVP form, and takes that into the 2014-2015 NBA season. The last time Rose played for Team USA was the summer of 2010 and he became the youngest player to win the NBA MVP award at the end of the 2010-2011 season. That same season, the Bulls had the best record in the NBA at 62-20. Do you think it’s a good idea for Rose to play for Team USA this summer? If you want to catch Team USA play Brazil in an exhibition game at the United Center, tickets go on sale for the game on May 16th.
