For the next 300 words, I’m not going to make a single reference to how little we have to talk about in the NBA offseason. Ready? Starting…now.

After Courtney Lee’s first day with the Celtics, he sent out this rather cryptic tweet:

Don't like to brag but I did dunk on some1 today that's about 6-7inches taller!!!! about 19 hours ago via Twitter for iPhoneReplyRetweetFavorite @CourtneyLee2211 Courtney Lee

Six or seven inches taller, eh? Let’s take a look!

Lee is 6’5, and since no one has ever been hyperbolic in the history of Twitter ever, this means that the mystery “someone” would have to be 6’11 or 7’0. That leaves the following possibilities (per the Celtics roster):

  • Fab Melo: 7’0
  • Jason Collins: 7’0
  • Kevin Garnett: 6’11
  • Chris Wilcox: 6’10

I’m including Wilcox because that extra inch can be awfully confusing. I, for example, am quite convinced that the 6’6 center who plays pick-up ball on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon is actually 7’4, with an 8’0 wingspan. So we’ll give Lee the benefit of the doubt here.

So let’s think this out. If Lee had tried to throw down on Garnett, he would have gotten a painful nutshot on his next layup attempt, and, since pretty much everyone knows this, I’m going to assume that Lee would have (wisely) chickened out on challenging him. Garnett is out.

Jason Collins would probably be pretty easy to dunk on, but given Collins’ age (33) and his athleticism (minimal), if Lee had thrown down over Collins, it’s safe to assume that his tweet would have read “I don’t like to brag, but I put a teammate in the hospital today!!!!!!!” So Collins is out, too.

That leaves Chris Wilcox and Fab Melo. Both tall dudes with long arms. But Wilcox has been in the league for years, whereas Melo is still a rookie. In fact, he’s a rookie who, if Summer League was any indicator, struggles considerably on defense and seems like the kind of player who wouldn’t know that Lee was about to throw down until the ball was hitting him on the head.

So. Fab Melo it is. Case closed.
