Phoenix Suns guard Eric Bledsoe had a breakout season in 2013-14 and entered restricted free agency this offseason. While the Suns have threatened to match any offer Bledsoe received from another team, they have still not agreed to a contract with their young star. On Thursday we got an idea why the two sides haven’t come to an agreement yet. Reports suggest that the Suns offered Bledsoe a four-year, $48 million deal but that the 24-year-old guard rejected that immediately. Bledsoe apparently wants a maximum deal that would wind up being a five-year, $80 million pact. The two sides are incredibly far apart in talks. Complicating matters is the fact that the Suns recently signed guard Isaiah Thomas to a long-term deal prying him away from the Sacramento Kings. With Bledsoe and Thomas, the Suns have a crowded backcourt when you add Goran Dragic to the mix. Something will have to give if the Suns want Bledsoe back. While none of his potential suitors appear to have the cap space to give him a max deal, someone could swoop in and steal him away if the Suns aren’t careful. The Kentucky product had a career-year last season. He averaged career highs in points (17.7), assists (5.5), rebounds (4.7), steals (1.6) and minutes (32.9) per game. Are those the numbers of a max contract guy? Probably not, but Bledsoe clearly believes his best days are in front of him. At this point it doesn’t look like anything could bring these two sides to an agreement. There is still a lot of time left for something to get done, but neither side seems willing to budge. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
