At this time last year, former Louisville big man Gorgui Dieng was helping guide the Cards to their third national championship in school history. These days Dieng is helping hold down the paint for the Minnesota Timberwolves. After a very slow start to his rookie season, Dieng has been playing very well as of late.
Minnesota starting center Nikola Pekovic has been injured for the past week and Dieng has been starting in his place. It would be an extreme understatement to say that Dieng is making the most of his opportunity.
Dieng has recorded double-double’s in four of the past five games that he has started. He become the first Minnesota rookie in franchise history to record a 20-&-20 game this past Thursday when he finished with 22 points and 21 rebounds against the Houston Rockets.

Minnesota Timberwolves: Gorgui Dieng; Elite Trade Bait
By Mike Elworth: Owner and Publisher/Hoopstuff…
Don’t look now, but Gorgui Dieng is playing better than any rookie in the NBA. He is just starting to receive real minutes and is playing All Star caliber basketball. No, seriously. Even though they have Nikola Pekovic who is one of the 5 best centers in the NBA, Dieng is proving...
Tweet Ever want to know what a NBA player in the midst of a depressing season looks like? Well, Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star forward Kevin Love has that sentiment down pat. Check out Love’s post-game interview after Minnesota were drubbed 109-92 by the Grizzlies Monday night and tell me this isn’t the look of a man defeated: Love looks the way he does because, frankly...
Who is Gorgui Dieng? The 24 year old rookie has gotten starts, burn and shots with Nikola Pekovic out. On Saturday, Dieng posted a Kevin Love-like line of 22/21/4 and was 10 for 11 from the free throw line against Houston when they opted to put all their effort in the paint into stopping Love. He had averaged 11/11 with a high FG% his previous 2, and with Pekovic out Sunday...
MINNEAPOLIS -- Anyone who's attended, watched or caught up on highlights of a Timberwolves game this season has seen it.
That classic Rick Adelman expression. Palms turned skyward, arms outstretched, eyes widened in befuddlement. A call he doesn't agree with draws it. So does an erratic Alexey Shved air ball.
And after trying -- and failing -- all season to establish an effective...
From the start Monday night in Memphis, the Timberwolves looked like a team that knows it's reached the end of the line.
The Grizzlies defeated Minnesota by a 109-92 score, furthering their playoff hopes while shoving their adversary further into the lottery sludge.
But the Timberwolves appeared defeated long before the final buzzer sounded at FedEx Forum.
"We got off to...
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, there’s an NBA superstar who plays power forward for a Minnesota Timberwolves team stuck going nowhere.
Just like Kevin Garnett before him, Kevin Love is dealing with yet another disappointing season as a top 10 player in Minnesota. Love is now in his sixth NBA season, and will be sitting at home watching the playoffs for the sixth straight...
MINNEAPOLIS -- It can be one of the most dubious junctures in a sports season, when the desired finish goes unfulfilled, yet there's still a competition to complete.
It's arrived in Minneapolis later than most in the Timberwolves' extended playoff absence, which barring the inconceivable will extend to a decade. But as of early Sunday evening, the postseason is almost...
Timberwolves star Kevin Love admitted Monday’s 109-92 loss at Memphis felt something like an emotional hangover one night after his team lost a big lead to Phoenix — and ultimately, a home game that doused what few playoff hopes still remained.
Now the question is: Will those blues linger for another 13 games until yet another season ends once again right around tax day?
Before the start of this NBA season, most people had the Minnesota Timberwolves penciled in as a playoff team but at this point of the season, it looks like they will be missing the playoffs.
Last night’s loss to the Memphis Grizzlies was their third straight and star Kevin Love’s postgame interview was a depressing affair.
Watch as Kevin answers a slew of questions from reporters...
As the fantasy basketball playoffs continue, so do the injuries! Before the start of last week, the Cleveland Cavaliers lost Kyrie Irving, the Minnesota Timberwolves lost Nikola Pekovic, and even the King himself, LeBron James missed a game. Russell Westbrook even left OKC's matchup with the Raptors after injuring his knee again. Now there is news that J.J. Hickson...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Gorgui Dieng had 15 points and 15 rebounds to continue his out-of-nowhere emergence and the Minnesota Timberwolves dealt the slumping Atlanta Hawks another costly loss with a 107-83 victory.
