Miami Heat star Udonis Haslem is calling foul on a proposed plan to put one of the nation's largest immigration detention facilities in his neighborhood.
"I am extremely upset that you are under talks with CCA Corporation and the Department of Homeland Security," writes Haslem, in a letter to the Town Council of Southwest Ranches. “I do not support this in anyway and hope that this project does not happen.”
Haslem's letter was sent last week to Residents Against ICE Southwest Ranches Detention Center, and hand delivered by his aunt to the town council.
A Miami native, Haslem has lived in Southwest Ranches with his family since 2007.
The 1,800-bed detention center will be built and run by Corrections Corporation of America, the largest private prison company in the nation. CCA signed a contract with Southwest Ranches in 2005 to bring a private prison to the area, which borders the Everglades.
The town will get a percentage of the money CCA receives from the Dep...

So how is Eddy Curry looking at Heat training camp?
Hard to say, considering the team has done a remarkable job of making someone that large disappear.
Tuesday, Curry again was out of sight at camp at AmericanAirlines Arena, and apparently will be out of mind for a few more days, as well.
So far, the Heat have had five camp sessions; Curry has not yet completed two.
The latest word...
The Heat have signed 33-year old SG/SF Shane Battier to a 3-year, $9 million dollar deal. He has now played in 767 games (619 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 32.9 minutes, 9.6 points,...
MIAMI Chris Bosh is calling for Chauncey Billups to come to Miami. So is Eddie House. Even incumbent starting point guard Mario Chalmers wouldn't mind it.
Billups, a six-time NBA All-Star at the point, was an amnesty victim last week by New York. If not picked up by another team, Billups will clear waivers at 6 p.m. EST Monday.
Billups, 35, wants to be a free agent and to...
LeBron James has been up to a lot of things this offseason, but perhaps none are more interesting than handing out Sheets to random people. Beginning today, Sheets Brand Energy Strips will be starting a highly publicized advertising campaign through the Sheets Facebook page. Entrants will have 45 days to submit their own creative take [...]
Rookie guard Norris Cole already has impressed Dwyane Wade by getting the ball to where the team’s best scorers are most comfortable.
At various times during Monday’s media day, Heat players were asked about Chris Paul’s impending move to the Clippers, as well as the Clippers’ failed bid to land Paul.
It also was a day when Heat players were united in their desire to add Chauncey Billups, only to learn before they left AmericanAirlines Arena that Billups had unexpectedly been claimed off waivers by the guard...
With just under two weeks to go before the NBA season tips off on Christmas Day, most teams in the league are in flux. Two of the top ten players in the league, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul, could be traded this week, while a number of contending teams are shaking up their rosters.
Regardless of what happens around the NBA in the next two weeks, when the Heat take on the defending...
Says new Heat teammate Shane Battier, "When you have good guys who are superstars, I think there's nothing but happiness for their success."
Usually NBA season previews are best read in October, back when football games hardly mattered, Midnight Madness was a few weeks away, and baseball was winding down. Perhaps with the last of the offseason's iced tea in hand, as you whiled away on an too-warm-for-the-season afternoon.
Well, pour yourself a glass of bull shot and tighten those mittens, because it's mid-December...
