Indiana State Sycamores: Robbie Avila Makes Huge Decision On His Future
Grace Hollars/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK

Indiana State Sycamores star and internet sensation Robbie Avila is taking his talents elsewhere.

Avila captivated college basketball fans everywhere with a stellar — and largely unexpected — breakout season for Indiana State. But his run with the Sycamores appears to be coming to an end.

Robbie Avila Announces His Decision To Enter Transfer Portal

Avila broke the news on his personal X account that he is entering his name into this offseason’s transfer portal.

The 20-year-old announced his decision by first thanking all those who were a part of his 2-year journey at Indiana State. His expression of gratitude included his faith, his fans, his friends, and his family — both basketball and blood.

“I would like to thank my teammates and coach over these last two years. The family bounds we’ve made have been absolutely special and will last a lifetime.

“Next I would like to thank Indiana State, the fans, and the entire city of Terre Haute for showing me the LOVE you guys did.

“Finally, I would like to thank my close friends and family, for without them I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today,” wrote Avila.

Avila ended his hearfelt message by officially stating his intention to enter the transfer portal with an optimistic eye toward the future.

Indiana State Sycamores Star Robbie Avila Won Us All Over This Season

One of the great tragedies of the 2024 NCAA Tournament was that Indiana State was left out of the competition entirely. The Sycamores were one of the few teams on the bubble that ended up getting snubbed by the selection committee.

The 32-7 Indiana State squad ended up with a 30-win season for just the second time in program history. The last time it happened, a man by the name of Larry Bird was on the team’s roster.

Avila was a central part of the Sycamores’ success this season. He led the team in scoring with averages of 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game on 53.6% shooting from the field. Avila’s outside shooting improved dramatically to 39.4% compared to 33.7% during his freshman season.

Avila — aka Cream Abdul-Jabbar or Larry Blurred — will have no shortage of suitors in the transfer portal.
