The Boston Celtics have hired Jay Larranaga as an assistant coach, sources tell Y! Larranaga had been head coach of Erie in the D-League. about 9 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski

After reportedly hiring Jay Larranaga on Monday, the Boston Celtics have accomplished what I’m sure was one of their top priorities this offseason: signing a coach with a DraftExpress page.

The son of James Larranaga, who’s most known for taking George Mason to the Final Four, Jay spent the past two seasons coaching the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA D-League, leading them to a 60-40 record with two consecutive playoff appearances. According to Cornell head coach Bill Courtney, under whom Larranaga worked briefly as an assistant, Larranaga is known as a skill developer.

“You’ll see a lot of guys get better (under Larranaga),” Courtney said. “That’s his strength.”

(Note: I just closed my eyes, imagined Avery Bradley with an impressive skill level and giggled uncontrollably.)

Larranaga, a 6-foot-5, 209-pounder during his playing days, spent time competing professionally in Spain, Italy and France. He played for years with the Irish national team and still holds the record for most made 3-pointers at Bowling Green (9)–which should make him the favorite against Fab Melo whenever the two have a shooting contest at practice.

I admittedly don’t know much else about Larranaga. But welcome aboard.
