The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Greg Somogyi from UC Santa Barbara.  The 7’3″ center towers over a 7’1″ Pau Gasol and a 6’11″ Dwight Howard.  Whether he makes the Lakers roster after training camp is still up for grabs.

According to the LA Times, the contract is a non-guaranteed one.  At Santa Barbara, he averaged just under 4 points and about 3 rebounds per game.  He would end up playing for the Lakers in the Summer League and averaged one and one.

The Lakers are definitely taken care of in the frontcourt with Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard.  Somogyi will definitely have to show a lot of grit to make the cut past training camp.  They also have Jordan Hill coming in playing valuable minutes so he would have to be fighting for playing time.  If the Lakers do add him, Somogyi would bring some length and provide Pau Gasol or Dwight Howard a short rest.  For now, consider this a signing just for the purposes of having bodies on the floor to practice with during training camp.
