The Memphis Grizzlies announced yesterday that head coach Lionel Hollins would not return as coach. He wasn't fired. Hollins didn't quit. They just didn't offer him a new contract. Since his current deal was set to expire at the end of June, the Grizzlies just made it affective immediately. With one broad stroke of the pen, or actually by doing nothing, the Memphis Grizzlies return to the land of mediocrity. And Lionel Hollins is a free man.Hollins masterfully guided the Grizzlies this season to the best record the franchise has seen, including it's time in the NBA wilderness of Vancouver. What does a 56-26 record get you? Apparently, not a lot in Memphis. Speculation about Hollins's coaching future spread like wildfire once the Grizzlies were swept in the Western Conference Finals by the Spurs. No matter that the Grizzlies beat the Clippers and Thunder, who were seeded higher in the West.According to multiple reports, Hollins was unhappy in the direction management was going with "analytics" which is the NBA's version of Sabrmetrics. I can see where General Manager John Hollinger might want to move in that direction, because of its success in baseball, but basketball is a different animal. Whereas basketball coaches can be praised for their in-game adjustments, baseball coaches aren't judged that way. Sure, how a bullpen and pitching staff are managed will get some scrutiny, but lineups generally don't change from day to day. But in baseball, you're not going to sit half your starters for some length, and then send them back in. Like I said, basketball success can't be judged the way baseball is. And Hollins took umbrage with that.Hollins will land a job pretty quickly, in my opinion. He'll be seen as an over-achiever, considering the Grizzlies didn't have that one big superstar to hang their hat on. And for the last two years, he's had good runs in the playoffs.Hollins deserved better than how he was treated by the Grizzlies management. I would love to say that one day the Grizzlies will see their error, but this is the Grizzlies. This is what they do.
