Found January 09, 2014 on Waiting For Next Year:
A whole lotta nines were bantered about on Wednesday afternoon as the city of Cleveland was introduced to their newest Cavalier in small forward in Luol Deng. The 6-foot-9-inch Deng, who now has nine years in the league, has worn the No. 9 on his jersey since the day he stepped foot into the NBA. One of nine children, the 28-year-old swingman wears the number as an homage to his mother, Martha. The only problem was that Matthew Dellavedova, the Cavaliers’ rookie point guard from St. Mary’s, has worn the same number all season and, just this week, had his jersey added to the mix within the Cavaliers team shop. Following a whirlwind of a practice, the two players met in the locker room. To listen to Deng tell the story was nothing short of entertaining. “It was one of the hardest things I had to do. I knew I had to speak to him at some point,” Deng said. “I think we sat in the locker room for a little while looking at each other. It was almost like we were about to break up. It was really hard, but he’s such a nice guy. He gave me the number. I’m definitely going to have to pay him back for that. It’s really nice of him to do that. I told him that if the number meant something really strong for him, I would pick something else.” Deng referred to the last 36 hours as “awkward” and “weird” as he was traded to the Cavaliers while family was in town for the holidays. Martha Deng, a novice of the NBA’s CBA, couldn’t understand why the Chicago Bulls would trade her son. It is his first time dealing with a change of this magnitude, but he affirmed that he feels he has been traded from “one winning organization to another.” Dellavedova, meanwhile, will wear No. 8 and continue to pester anyone not wearing a Cavaliers uniform. – (Image via Scott Sargent/WFNY)

Luol Deng denies asking Chicago Bulls for $15 million per season.

Luol Deng could not hide his disappointment after the Chicago Bulls decided to trade him to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. Speaking to reporters for the first time since being dealt to the Cavs, Deng, wearing number 8 for the first time, wanted to make a few things clear. He is not angry with the Chicago Bulls and he never asked them for $15 million per season. “My thing is...

Deng denies asking Bulls for $15M per year

Wearing an unfamiliar No. 8 on his practice jersey, made even stranger by the fact it said Cavaliers on it, Luol Deng wanted to make two things clear Wednesday. He’s not bitter. And despite reports, he never asked for $15 million a year from the Bulls, who traded Deng to Cleveland on Monday in a financial move to create flexibility for the future. “My thing is in the summer...

Bulls sad about losing Deng

At last check, Luol Deng was alive and well in Cleveland. He’s upright, walking and actually breathing. That bit of news seems to have eluded his former teammates even though it has been four days since he was traded to the Cavaliers for 12 hours of Andrew Bynum’s contract, three draft picks, financial flexibility and a whole lot of hope. “It’s still strange not having...

Days after the Luol Deng trade, Joakim Noah still hasn’t spoken to the media

Nobody on the Chicago Bulls was happy about the Luol Deng trade. Even the most ardent of Bulls salary capologists couldn’t have easily stomached a deal that sent away a two-time reining All-Star for no immediate rotation help, no likely first round draft picks (unless you’re really bullish on the future of the Sacramento Kings and Cleveland Cavaliers), and no real solution at...

Cavs look to begin Luol Deng era with coveted road win in Utah

The Utah Jazz are 11-11 since Nov. 25. The Cavs are 2-15 on the road this season. Those two stats should be the featured numbers on the minds of Cleveland Cavaliers fans this evening. But, understandably, fans are wildly optimistic with this week’s big news. Luol Deng should certainly help the Cavs. He’s a two-time All-Star and he’s averaging a career-high in points. I wouldn’t...

Will the Luol Deng to Cleveland trade alter the Celtics draft position?

Last night the Bulls dealt All-Star forward Luol Deng to the Cavs for Andrew Bynum (who's going to be cut before 5 pm today) and some draft picks.  Basically the question is, who's tanking now? Losers of 4 in a row and 7 of 8, the Celtics potential draft position has been skyrocketing of late (with a brutal schedule on the way for the next 11 games as well).  Just last...

Could Chicago Bulls be moving more players?

When news broke late Monday night that the Chicago Bulls had broken up their championship-contending core by trading Luol Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the proverbial blood was in the water almost immediately. Rival executives had been waiting and wondering whether the Bulls would have to go this route, to opt for Plan B because of Derrick Rose's second season-ending injury...

The Andrew Bynum era is done in Cleveland. Late Monday night, the Cleveland Cavs and Chicago Bulls executed a trade that will send Bynum to the Bulls along with a few draft picks. Bynum is expected to be waived before the 5:00 PM Tuesday deadline. The Bulls are sending two-time All-Star Luol Deng to the Cavs for Andrew Bynum, three future draft picks and major salary savings. Cavaliers celebrate Luol Deng with biggest win of season

The Cavaliers played like a team that's pretty pumped up about two-time All-Star Luol Deng coming to Cleveland on Tuesday night. After news of the trade broke earlier that morning, the Cavs capitalized on a palpable buzz inside the arena by dominating the Philadelphia 76ers from start to finish. The only moments of suspense in the second half surrounded C.J. Miles and his quest...

A native of South Sudan, Ajou appeared in seven games as a true freshman in 2012-13 prior to undergoing season-ending knee surgery. He received a medical hardship waiver and played...

A Closer Look At The Cleveland Cavaliers’ Roster Moves?

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls made 2014’s first major trade, with the Bulls ending Luol Deng to Cleveland for Andrew Bynum’s half-guaranteed deal, a future Sacramento 1st, a 2015 pick swap option and multiple Portland 2nds. The risk of the deal has been covered in many places. Deng is an unrestricted free agent and while trading for him early increases the Cavaliers...
