For the past eight years John Hollinger has been covering the NBA for ESPN.com.  He's now leaving his job as a coloumnist to be apart of the league he has covered since his online career began in 1996. Hollinger has accepted a position from the Memphis Grizzlies to become their vice president of basketball operations, reports ESPN. Hollinger is known for devising the formula to measure every player's Player Efficiency Rating (PER), he will begin his new job with the Grizzlies next week. "It's incredibly difficult to leave ESPN, but the chance to work for an NBA team and the Grizzlies' new ownership was an irresistible opportunity," Hollinger said Thursday. Grizzlies controlling owner Robert Pera and CEO/managing partner Jason Levien recruited Hollinger and Stu Lash, who was hired as their director of plater personnel and basketball development, to upgrade Memphis's analytics department.   We are thrilled to have John and Stu join the Grizzlies," Levien said in a release. "Both of these individuals will provide innovative and unique perspectives that bolster the organization's future." According to ESPN, Chris Wallace will remain the Grizzlies general manager but Hollinger will have a "prominent voice in the team's front office beyond providing statistical analysis."

JaVale McGee catches Randolph shot

JaVale McGee blocked a whole lot of Grizzly shots — four of ‘em, to be specific — in Denver’s 99-94 victory over Memphis on Friday night.  They were all pretty spectacular, but there was one that… well, I don’t want to say it stood out, because that would simply be an understatement.  This particular block was profoundly different from the others.  Not just the others...

Memphis Grizzlies continue to nerd up their basketball operations

They are one of the better teams in the NBA, but the Memphis Grizzlies rarely get any love. The lack of attention they receive on SportsCenter make the San Spurs look like rock stars. They are best known for having the ‘other Gasol’ and once being an NBA franchise in Vancouver. But as it stands [...]

Memphis Grizzlies hire ESPN's John Hollinger

The Memphis Grizzlies have hired ESPN columnist and basketball sabermetrician John Hollinger to be their vice president of basketball operations. Hollinger, who had been with ESPN since 2005, continues the march of teams across all sports to become more data-driven and analytic by hiring prominent Internet columnists and analysts, including Mike Fast and Kevin Goldstein of Baseball...

Danilo Gallinari Self Alley-Oop vs. Grizzlies (Video)

Never seen this before in the NBA.  Always just thought it was something people did in dunk contests.  Check out the video below of Danilo Gallinari throwing a self alley-oop off the backboard last night against the Memphis Grizzlies. Honestly didn't think Gallinari had anything like that in him.  Usually I hate on Euro basketballers (mainly for their bad hair cuts...

Grizzlies-Nuggets Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies may not be very jolly, but they're seemingly in a giving mood this holiday season. The Grizzlies will likely need to take better care of the ball if they're going to avoid a three-game slide and win consecutive road meetings against the Denver Nuggets for the first time Friday night. Although they still have one of the best records in the league, the...

Grizzlies-Jazz Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies are on their longest slide of the season, and concluding this three-game road trip against the Utah Jazz doesn't seem to be the ideal way to solve it. The Grizzlies attempt to snap their skid by winning in Salt Lake City for the first time in almost six years Saturday night. Memphis (14-6) has dropped four of six games this month and three in a row following...

John Hollinger to Join Memphis Grizzlies Front Office

John Hollinger to Leave ESPN   One had to assume it was only a matter of time before a revolutionary figure in the advanced analytical world of basketbal statistics would join an NBA’s team front office. Today that became official.  John Hollinger, the inventor of the much used ‘Player Efficiency Rating’ statistic and ESPN’s primary [...]

Randolph, Memphis beat Jazz to halt skid

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Zach Randolph scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Utah Jazz 99-86 on Saturday night to halt a three-game losing streak. The win was Memphis' first in Salt Lake City since an overtime victory on Jan. 24, 2007, as the Grizzlies had dropped nine straight in Utah until Saturday. The Grizzlies outscored Utah 28-10...

JaVale McGee blocks Zack Randolph's shot, catches it (Video)

In another edition of amazing things that Denver Nuggets center JaVale McGee can do, he pulled off the first catch block that I've seen in NBA history.During last night's Denver Nuggets/Memphis Grizzlies affair, Zach Randolph appeared to have an open look at a jumper. That open look turned into a JaVale McGee block in mere seconds:

Grizzlies 99, Jazz 86

Zach Randolph scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Utah Jazz 99-86 on Saturday night to halt a three-game losing streak. The win was Memphis' first in Salt Lake City since an overtime victory on Jan. 24, 2007, as the Grizzlies had dropped nine straight in Utah until Saturday. The Grizzlies outscored Utah 28-10 in the third quarter...

JaVale McGee blocks Zach Randolph's jump shot by catching it (Video)

Denver Nuggets forward JaVale McGee blocked a jump shot from Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph by simply grabbing it out of the air and catching it during the fourth quarter of Friday night's NBA game at the Pepsi Center. The play by McGee started a Nuggets fast break which was finished by a Ty Lawson layup. McGee finished with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocked...

Pau! Right In The Kisser!

Pau Gasol and the Lakers have had a train wreck of a season so far.  Pau is seeing nearly all his numbers being below career average (12.6/8.9/3.5/0.5/1.2 with 42% FG and 76% FT) and having “knee tendinitis” to boot.  As such, I had to move him down in the tiers because you can’t be a Victoria’s Secret model with those type of numbers.  I’m sticking him two tiers lower...
