Fox Sports Southwest:
Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash were best buds when the two played together with the Mavericks.
After Nash left for other NBA pastures, including joining the Lakers this season, the two have remained friends. But friendship only goes so far between Western Conference rivals.
"I wished him the best when he signed with L.A.," Nowitzki told The Dallas Morning News. "I said, 'Have a great year and I hope you lose to the Mavs.' But it didn't happen."
The Lakers lead the season series with the Mavericks, 2-1, but Tuesday's final meeting in Los Angeles is a huge one in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Lakers are a half-game behind Utah, which currently holds the eighth playoff spot. The Mavericks are a 1.5 games behind the Lakers. The Lakers have eight games left, the Mavs have nine.
Nash won't play in Tuesday's game because of a strained right hamstring. No matter what happens the rest of the way, Nowitzki and Nash are sure to remain friends.
"Yeah, we do stay in touch," Nowitzki said. "He came to my wedding last summer had a blast there. We try to keep in touch as much as we can, but obviously, he's got kids and family and stuff going on. So we don't see each other as much anymore, like we used to, but we try to keep in touch."
When they do get the together, the talk is rarely about basketball.
"We don't really talk hoops much," Nowitzki said, noting the one obvious exception of when Nash signed with the Lakers.

Steve Nash is still battling a hip injury. The Los Angeles Lakers' point guard sat out last night's game against the Dallas Mavericks with the hip strain. It didn't matter much, though, as the Lakers beat the Mavs 101-81.Mike Trudell of NBA.com says Nash sat out because of the hip and Blake was to get the start in his place - which he did. Dirk Nowitzki finally leads the Dallas Mavericks in scoring again. He has more work to do if he wants to make the playoffs for a 13th straight season.
The 7-foot German passed O.J. Mayo even before getting a season-high 35 and hitting a last-second 3-pointer to complete a stirring rally against Chicago over the weekend.
The Mavericks started winning at a playoff pace once Nowitzki...
IS DWIGHT RIGHT?
After beating the Kings on Saturday, Lakers center Dwight Howard said on Monday that he believes the team can win out and finish the season with 9 wins in a row.
Dwight Howard has missed more free throws this year than his Los Angeles Lakers teammate Steve Nash has in his entire career, no joke.

The 2012/13 NBA season looked like it was going to be all about power packed backcourt duos. The offseason saw numerous high profile guard combos hook up - the Lakers with Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant; Houston's Jeremy Lin and James Harden; Brooklyn teamed up Joe Johnson with Deron Williams. But which NBA backcourt starting pair...
Wednesday morning, 10:45 a.m., Target Center, Minneapolis.
The Lakers shuffle into shootaround, their line single-file, their hoods up, chatter nonexistent. This is not a raucous group, not a particularly cheerful one, and when 39-year-old Steve Nash is doing squats deeper than those of any of his teammates during drills, you know there's at least something of a problem.
Only Important Injuries:
-Steve Nash likely out (stock up for Kobe Bryant, Steve Blake)
-LeBron, Wade, Chalmers out (stock up for Chris Bosh, Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Norris Cole)

The Lakers will most likely do whatever they can to trade Pau Gasol this summer in order to help keep their salary books under what is currently $100 million.
Gasol knows it. But that doesn't stop him from giving his all on the floor for this team.
In a crucial game against the Mavericks on Tuesday, Pau put on a defensive effort on Dirk Nowitzki that really set the tone...
