When the Toronto Raptors offered Alan Anderson a ten-day contract, he couldn’t say yes fast enough.  Anderson, who played collegiately at Michigan State was once an undrafted free agent signee by the Charlotte Bobcats.  He played with Charlotte and in the NBA D-League from 2005-2007 before bouncing around leagues overseas faster than a pogo stick on speed.

He played in Italy in 2007-2008, Russia in 2008, Croatia in 2008-2009, Israel in 2009-2010, back to the D-League in 2010, to Spain in 2010-2011, to China in 2011 and back to the D-League earlier this year before signing with Toronto.

Obviously playing in the NBA offers perks upon perks when traveling on the road.  Some players may have to endure the heckling of opposing fans, but as your parents said, “names will never hurt you.”  Names won’t hurt you, but lighters, padlocks and toilet piping could.  Say what?!

Anderson told the National Post reminisced about the days when he played for his Croatian team when they visited Serbia.

“I used to get locks, lighters [thrown at me]. It was Serbia. I played on a Croatian team. So when we went to Serbia, there were times when we had probably three busloads of police, 20 or 25 cops that had to barricade us when we got from the bus to the building,” Anderson said. “Locks, lighters. They used to take off the metal things on the toilet, because they used to have metal detectors to get into the arena, break those off the toilet [and throw them at us]. When you’re warming up [he mimics the sound of something flying by his face.], ‘Oh man, I can’t even warm up. You almost hit me with a lock.’ Atmosphere is crazy.”

Like I said, say what?!  Since when did Philadelphia fans invade Serbia?  And what do they have against Alan Anderson?  He won’t have to worry about padlocks playing in Canada, but might want to watch his back for french fries with gravy.  That’s how those weird Canadians do.
