There will be no Luke Walton-Andrew Bynum reunion. The LA Times’ Eric Pincus reports that the Cavs have renounced the rights to Luke Walton. Cavaliers have renounced the rights to Luke Walton – the NBA will never be the same — Eric Pincus (@EricPincus) July 12, 2013 This isn’t exactly surprising.  No longer do the Cavs simply need veteran leaders, they’re now looking for veteran leaders who can also perform on the court. Now that the Cavs are in the post-tanking stage of the rebuild, they’re signing NBA players who are still in the prime (like Jarrett Jack) or can actually defend NBA players in their prime (like Earl Clarke). Walton, acquired for Ramon Sessions at the 2012 trade deadline, appeared in 50 games for the Cavs last season, averaging 3.4 points, 3.3 assists and 2.9 in in 17 minutes per night. Walton and the bench crew (Shaun Living, Marreese Speights and Wayne Ellington) were a big reason why the Cavs went 7-5 in the month of February (their only winning month of the season). It was a rough season and Walton’s passing was a small bright spot during the dark winter months (Walton had fourteen games of five or more assists this season).  [Related: A Different King of Offseason for the Cavaliers]
