Yahoo.com recently reported that Jason Kidd is looking to be a possible candidate as the Brooklyn Nets head coach. The Nets recently fired P.J Carlesimo and have been looking for his replacement. There have been a few names that are expected to interview for the position and now it looks like Kidd is another candidate. Jason Kidd could be a great coach, but not right now. Playing basketball is much different than coaching the game. Yes as a point guard Kidd was in charge of leading the team and being the general on the court. Kidd has an abundance of experience since he has played in the NBA since 1994. Yet now more than ever you have to be a manager of egos as well as a coach. I am not sure if Kidd can handle that since he just retired from the NBA as a player. According to ESPN.com Jason Kidd met with Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy King today to explain why he would make a great coach. There are also reports that Jason would look to former Nets coach Lawrence Frank to be an assistant coach. This should be the other way around. I am not saying Frank should get the job over Kidd, but Jason should go somewhere first as an assistant and get more experience in a coaching role. There seems to be a big rush from the Nets and Kidd to possibly make headlines and sell tickets if Kidd becomes the head coach. Other players like Doc Rivers and Mark Jackson have been players who became successful coaches. Rivers has been a tremendous head coach as he led the Boston Celtics to a NBA Finals title. With those two gentlemen, they retired from the NBA as a player took some time off and did some work on TV by becoming a commentators for networks. They started to be able to analyze the game and learn more about other teams and different methods that were used by each team. Rivers and Jackson were able to study the game since that was their job. They got paid to dissect a team and breakdown their strengths and weaknesses to education the viewers watching the game. This was a process for these guys and it helped them understand the game from a different perspective. I am not saying Kidd has to become an analyst, but he should at least become an assistant coach first. Jason doesn’t need to do a cannonball in the deep end of the pool. He can tip his toe in the shallow end first and learn “coach speak.” This way he can be mentored by a head coach with experience as a coach and build an even bigger knowledge of the game to become a better coach. San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was asked after Game 2 of the Finals about the possibility of Kidd becoming a coach.  Pop said, “When you’ve played for a number of coaches, he’s pretty much seen everything that the NBA can offer. So he does have experience. If he’s crazy enough to want to be a head coach in this league, I wish him all the best.” I would love to see Kidd as a head coach in the league. He has the potential to become a decent coach. He should just go through the right channels first and climb up the coaching ladder instead of taking the elevator right to the top.
