The Magic are quickly hurtling toward a flashpoint in their franchise's history as the Dwight Howard saga will get a final resolution this offseason. That is what team President Alex Martins has alluded to since the Magic's elimination from the postseason, vowing the team would not go through the ordeal and turmoil it went through in 2012.
He fired Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith and is seeking to completely remake the Magic organization to clean up the mess from last season.
The first step in this remodeling project comes in the form of hiring a new general manager.
The Magic have been looking everywhere for a splashy name with championship experience and the ability to connect and work with players (read: Dwight Howard) better. The assumption is that this general manager will be given more authority to establish that program and more freedom to trade Dwight Howard should Howard decline a final offer for a long-term extension in Orlando.

Contrary to earlier reports, the retired coach reportedly remains interested in a front office position with the Orlando Magic.
Phil Jackson's agents and an Orlando Magic source Wednesday both denied the former Lakers and Bulls coach had made contact about a potential front-office role with the organization, NBA.com reported.
Sports Illustrated had reported that a proposal was submitted by former Bulls player Sam Vincent on Tuesday.
But, according to the agents, he had no authorization to speak on the...
Though the rumors of Phil Jackson returning to New York to coach have ceased with Mike Woodson formally signing a contract extension, that hasn't stopped Jackson's name from being attached to the other notable open positions in the NBA.The Orlando Magic were clearly frustrated by the fallout between Dwight Howard and former coach Stan Van Gundy, as well as the team's...
Representatives for Phil Jackson submitted a new proposal to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday for the 11-time NBA championship-winning coach to run the team.
It was reported last week that Jackson had decided against pursuing a role with the coachless team's front office.
But according to a Sports Illustrated report early Wednesday, which cited sources, the discussions are still...
Magic fans have not heard from Dwight Howard in a while. He has been rehabbing in Los Angeles after back surgery in April and by all accounts -- usually a stray comment from Alex Martins or a sidewalk interview with TMZ -- Howard's recovery is going fine.
There are even some rumors that Howard is going to be making his way back to Orlando soon. Who really knows, though?
"Loyalty" isn't exactly the word that comes to mind when you think of Dwight Howard's relationship with the Orlando Magic. But, hey, whatever sells t-shirts.
Let’s face it, the Orlando Magic need a big splashy hires to replace Jeff Van Gundy and Otis Smith if they hope to have any chance of keeping Dwight Howard. And there would be no bigger splashy hire than bringing in Phil Jackson to run the team.
There was said to be interest on both sides, but the ship seemed to have sailed last week when the Orlando Sentinel reported that Phil...
Silence can be an organization's biggest weapon, and one of its biggest risks.
Magic fans are growing frustrated with this longer-than-expected process to hire a new GM and you knew it would not take long for something crazy to jump into the fold without much backing. All the while, Orlando has remained silent, unable and unwilling to comment on a search that is ongoing.
Both the agents for Phil Jackson and an Orlando Magic source denied Wednesday any contact between the parties about a role in the front office.
The Magic are still hunting for a GM, look for a brief update on that later today over at Crossover Chronicles, and there appears to be no leader.
One rumor just will not die though. Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated is reporting that Sam Vincent is preparing to present another plan to Magic brass that would put Phil Jackson in some role with the franchise:
According to the sources...
Orlando Magic Receive: Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks, Gerald Wallace and Three 1st Rnd Picks
Brooklyn Nets Receive: Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu
- This is obviously not the best package for Howard, but this seems to be Howard’s preferred destination and if he forces his way to Brooklyn, the Magic will have to settle for whatever the Nets have, besides Deron Williams. Although...
Barring some sort of Deron Williams/Dwight Howard free agency/trade miracle, Jostens probably won’t be whipping up another batch of Dallas Mavericks Championship rings any time soon. Still, it’s interesting to observe the creativity that went into designing the ring, and then the actual creation process itself. You can skip to the 1:30 mark of the video embedded above (via...
