Paul Pierce had the same number of missed shots yesterday (seven) as points. He had as many turnovers (five) as rebounds. He shot two for nine in a playoff game for a total of seven points. After hitting his first shot, a contested face-up jumper from the wing, he missed seven of his final eight attempts. This was not vintage Pierce, or anything close. If he smelled like roses during Game 2 against Atlanta, yesterday he smelled like a garbage dumpster filled to the brim with nothing but three-years old gallons of milk.Explaining Pierce’s no-show has to begin with a description of Andre Iguodala’s defense. But it also includes Pierce’s knee, which still bothers him. He wouldn’t admit it, of course, but Doc Rivers told a different story.“Paul clearly is not 100 percent,” he admitted.Said Pierce, “The knee was fine. I wore my knee brace today.”Pierce didn’t actually wear a brace, but the second sentence of his statement was just as truthful as the first. I don’t have any concrete evi...

Paul Pierce Goes Out of Element, Inspires Teammates to Lead Celtics to Wide Victory Over Sixers in Game 3

PHILADELPHIA -- Every time he took a hard hit without drawing a whistle, Paul Pierce glared at the officials a little longer and a little icier. The Philadelphia 76ers knew the Celtics captain was gutting through a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, and they sensed a weakness. Rather than back off the guy with the gimpy leg, the Sixers hammered away at the veteran...

Doc Rivers Named to NBA Competition Committee, One of First Coaches to Join Recomposed Body

PHILADELPHIA -- Doc Rivers will soon have the power to make rules. The Celtics coach will not have the power to, say, decide a late-game screen by Kevin Garnett was legal or anything, but he will be one of the first coaches to vote on proposed rule changes as a member of the NBA's competition committee, the league announced Wednesday. Rivers was one of three coaches named to...

Mavs Odom Trade Ideas: Pierce, Gasol, J-Smith

The Mavs are now on record as viewing Lamar Odom's contract as a 'very desireable' trade asset. That's the trigger for us to play 'Amateur GM' and to construct concepts featuring Josh Smith, Pau Gasol or Paul Pierce. What's pie-in-the-sky? What's 'very desireable'? Read on:

Celtics offense leaves them small margin of error

As any Boston Celtics fan with a pair of working eyes knows, the Celtics offense can very closely resemble a driver stuck in traffic — moving nowhere fast, it makes less sense to dwell on the lack of forward progress than it does to blast music, telephone a friend and generally do whatever you can to keep your mind off all the goddamn cars stuck in place. As Paul Flannery writes...

Garnett, Pierce, Rondo lead Celts' win

Kevin Garnett scored 27 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and used a dominant second quarter to help the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 107-91 on Wednesday night and take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Whistled for a costly illegal pick late in a Game 2 loss, Garnett crushed the Sixers early and never let them think about a fourth-quarter rally. Garnett...

Avery Bradley’s shoulder popped back in, but still an issue moving forward

Avery Bradley’s shoulder popped out, the team doctor shoved it back in and Bradley rested for a couple quarters. He later returned in the final frame to provide some clutch play, but the shoulder issue isn’t going away.As Doc Rivers explained, “This is the third time now in two weeks his shoulder’s come out. Can’t be a good feeling. Number one, it has to hurt like heck...

Examining How Bill Belchick and Doc Rivers Talk With The Media About Injuries

They are both among the longest-tenured head coaches in their respective leagues. They have both won conference and league championships. They both seemingly manage to get more out of their teams than the roster talent would indicate. But when it comes to dealing with the media, Bill Belichick and Doc Rivers could not be more different. Or are they more alike than a surface examination...

Presence of Ray Allen, Avery Bradley and Paul Pierce Provide Boost for Celtics, However Small

PHILADELPHIA -- Ray Allen finds it hard to say no to a treadmill. The Celtics shooting guard was in a conundrum when he encountered that piece of exercise equipment here, where the Celtics were due to take on the Sixers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday. Allen, who is known to take hundreds of jump shots and run several miles every day when healthy, prudently...
